Yummy Gumball Machine and Cupcake Ornament

My children love to make things, and every year we set out to make some ornaments that are cute and easy.  I love seeing Christmas trees that are decorated in candy, with gumdrop garland and all sorts of delicious looking decorations.  That inspired me to delve into the sweet side of  things for these two ornaments.  After all what is cuter than a cupcake?  Therefore here is my Gumball Machine ornament and my Cupcake ornament.

For the Gumball Machine Ornament you need:

  • Glass ornament ball
  • mini pom poms
  • foam sheet
  • sharpie
  • round cap from a medicine bottle or other small bottle
  • hot glue

First you open up the glass ball by carefully removing the metal cap.  Add the pom poms into the ball, filling it as much as you like.  I filled it a little more than 1/4 full.  Then replace the metal cap.

I used a sheet of pink foam and took a medicine cap and measured the foam to go around the cap.  I cut the foam to just the size to wrap around the cap and then I glued it to the cap.  Then I cut the tube of foam down to the size I thought was proportional to the ball.  The cap helped to create a shape that would supply structure and stability.

Next I glued around the inside edge of the foam and placed the ball firmly on top.  Then with a sharpie I drew the gumball hole on the front.  Last I cut a small piece of the foam and wrapped and glued it around the metal top of the glass ball.

For the Cupcake Ornament you will need:

  • cupcake paper
  • styrofoam ball
  • paint
  • glitter
  • Elmers glue
  • hot glue
  • red bead
  • metal ornament hook

First You will want to cut the bottom of the styrofoam ball off to give the cupcake a flat foundation.  I used a knife and sawed mine off.  Then paint the ball whatever color you want your cupcake to be.  Before the paint dries sprinkle some glitter over the ball.  Then let that dry.

Once the paint is dry you can blow off the excess glitter, and then glue the cupcake wrapper to your ball with hot glue.  Next I made a drippy design with the Elmers glue and shook another color glitter on top.  Then allow that to dry.  Lastly I stuck a metal ornament hook into my ball at the top, and threaded a red bead over the hook.  I glued it to the top of my cupcake to keep it there.

Whalla two easy ornaments that look good enough to eat.  These are so fun for little children to create.  You can let them add cotton to the top of the cupcake as whipped cream or add jewel sprinkles.  Then you have adorable ornaments that work great as teacher’s gifts,  gifts for grandparents, or just a beautiful addition to your family tree.  I love the fact that you can color coordinate either of these ornaments to a tree’s colors.  My friend has an all purple ornamented tree.  I think she will love a Gumball Machine with purple foam and pom poms in dark purple, silver, and white.

Which sweet ornament will you try first?
