As I was reading the paper today I saw an announcement about a local car show. I was immediately taken back a few years to when my oldest kids were little. My husband loves car shows and every fall we would visit as many events as we could find! It was a family affair. The whole family would load up with everything we needed for a fun-filled day: a wagon to haul the kids and a fully stocked cooler! Outside of a family vacation this was our main activity we enjoyed doing together. There, my husband and I would dream about our favorite classics while our kids felt like they were at a museum (educational too!)
Have you ever been to a car show with your family?
If you have never been to a car show, let me paint you a picture that will make you WANT to go to one! For us, the large car shows were always our favorite. Moments after walking through the gates everyone would be taken into a world of “wow” because the prettiest cars would be up front to capture everyone’s attention immediately. After the initial eye candy, the smell from the food row captivates your senses. The sights and smells together become so familiar you can almost smell the food just thinking about entering the car corral for the first time!
What not to do at a car show…
No, I’m not talking about not touching the car, watching your belongings to prevent them from hitting the sides while you lean in for a look, or even the basic rule of “don’t climb in”. I’m talking about the part that nobody tells mom about until after she is standing in the middle of a sea of “no way! Why am I here?” What am I referring to? Some events have miscellaneous vendors and a part salvage area. Completely bores me and can ruin a great afternoon of going back in time with “good vibrations” and “cool cruisers”! I recommend you discuss this with Dad before going so he understands that he may be on his own if he’s on the hunt for vintage parts.
Why go at all?
Kids rarely pay any attention to what is going on around them when you’re driving. But when the car show comes to town, my kids put their devices down and will start pointing out vintage rides at every red-light and side road. Their senses are heightened and they pay attention. (I love it!) Although the show doesn’t last long, the memory of them looking at everything with such wonder is spectacular and one that no family should miss!
