Make a Sock Snowman
It is time for Christmas crafts. I love crafts and Christmas, so to me this is the best time of year. As soon as fall kicks in I start to figure out what crafts to do with my kids. We always make some crafts for Christmas presents to family. My mom’s tree is full of ornaments the kids made over the years. It is so cool to see their creations year after year, and to add new ones. This year we decided to make sock snowmen, although they won’t hang on the tree.
What you will need for one sock snowman
- 1 long sock- there are probably perfect ones in the back of your sock drawer.
- About a pound of uncooked rice
- Fabric scraps for scarf
- Glitter paint
- Googly eyes
- String or ribbon
- Scissors
- Buttons or other adornments
- Glue gun
How to make your sock snowman
First choose a sock that is a color you like and is fairly long. White would be best for a traditional snowman. Then take the sock and cut across at the heel to separate it into two halves. The foot part is what you want to fill with the rice. You can fill it until you are happy with the size of your snowman. Then tie off the top opening with a piece of string.
Now shape the head of the snowman by pinching in where you want the neck to be. While holding it determine if the head looks good. If it does tie string or your fabric scraps around the neck to make a scarf. Now take the other half of the sock and slip it on the snowman’s head, cuff it at the head if you want to make a proper snow hat. Then tie off the cut end of the hat with string or fabric. The tuft that sticks up past the tie can be cut to look like a puffy hat tip.
Now You can use hot glue to add your googly eyes. I also hot glued a big bow on mine. For the mouths we just used glitter glue to draw them on. My son added buttons down his snowman’s front, while I painted red glitter hearts on mine. Lastly I added eyelashes with the glitter paint.
My son used a second sock as his hat. It was a short sock, so he tucked the end in the big brim and glued it making a beanie style hat. My other son used the left over sock from that pair to create a cute sweater for his snowman. These snowman are only limited by your creativity.
My daughter found some scraps of ballet shoe patterned fabric and decided to make a snow ballerina. She used tulle to fashion a tutu by knotting alternating pink and purple tulle strings onto another piece of tulle, then tying that around her sock. Then she found some stuff in our craft room to make a beaded tiara for her dancer. Lastly a bun of pink yarn hair, googly eyes, and a smile finished her pretty snow girl up.
You could get very creative with these sock snowman, or you could create a few simple snowman in no time at all. Furthermore they would make excellent teacher gifts or holiday decorations for your home.
