Christmas Countdown: Top 7 Creative Kid’s Gifts

December 12, 2011 by Pam Maynard

Top 7 Children’s Christmas Gifts

Parents and other family members want their Christmas gifts to capture the imagination and creativity of their youngsters. What are some gift ideas that will continue to excite children long after they’ve torn off the wrapping paper?

1. For kids with imaginary playmates, Folkmanis puppets provide hours of make-believe with three-headed dragons, a safari with jungle and African grassland animals like cheetahs and antelope, or an Adirondack forest complete with a huge bat and a raccoon in a trash can. These puppets are incredibly soft and beautifully made, with many sizes to accommodate all ages. Don’t be surprised if Mom and Dad get caught playing with them too!

2. For the quieter child, Dover coloring books have high quality reproductions of art in many areas. Choose a Japanese theme for real samurai warriors, lighthouses of the world for a young mariner, or art nouveau posters for a budding artist. Put these into a portfolio case with non-toxic colored pencils and a cool sharpener, and they’re ready to go for traveling too. Add a blank drawing pad for even more self-expression.

3. For those interested in the world, Thames & Kosmos make science kits that will amaze children of all ages. The Little Labs series has kits on the human body, weather, plants, animal science, and more. The Fun series helps children conduct experiments using bubbles or balloons. The Balloon kit won a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award in 2004. Other kits include solar cooking, glowing crystals, dinosaur fossils, and a forensic fingerprint lab. For children 8 and older, the Remote Control Construction Kit allows them to create 10 different vehicles, including a crane, a formula one racing car, bulldozer, three-wheeler, and more – all powered by a wireless remote! Playing with these kits allows children to improve hand-eye coordination, empower their creative thinking skills, and develop their understanding of how machines work.

4. For younger architects, All-American Toys offers many sets of made-in-the-US wooden blocks. There are simple sets for beginners and more shapes for the advanced builder. Log cabins and classic forts are available for the child interested in the old West.

5. For the ever-curious child, Fat Brain Toys provides puzzles, teasers, mazes, crafts, magnets, and games to improve logic and spatial skills. Shop by age to get ideas that might otherwise be overlooked. Perplexus is a toy guaranteed to have everyone by the tree clamoring for a turn. The transparent sphere with interior maze builds focus and coordination into playtime.

6. For video gaming children, Angry Birds Knock on Wood game is the perfect way to lure them from the screen to reality. It allows kids to set up their own pig hiding places and knock them down using the birds. The skills to be learned here include the physics of direction, force, and angle. The fact that it’s a video game come to life keeps the gamers engaged.

7. For the musician or movie fan, Toysmith makes a Multi Voice Changer that will have adults playing with it too. There are 10 different sounds, plus switches to blend them into infinite permutations of voices. With flashing lights and the battery already included, the Voice Changer is ideal for special effects for movies, campfires, and recording.

These gifts will provide hours of creativity fun for children of all ages.
