5 Ways to Effectively Handle a Big Family Move Without the Help of Professionals

October 29, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Moving your belongings by yourself can be a daunting and stressful task. If hiring a professional is too expensive and can’t fit in your budget, then you may no choice but to move on your own. To make sure this move is as stress free as possible, here are five ways to make that move without using the pros.

5-ways-to-effectively-handle-a-big-family-move-without-the-help-of-professionals
1. Have a Plan

Before you even purchase your first moving box, have a plan in place. Do you have a moving date in mind? How long do you think the move will take? Will you have enough time to pack your belongings in a truck or trailer? Moving can often take a lot longer than you think, so it’s best to budget at least one day per room you have to pack before the big moving day.

2. Start Recruiting

Reach out to those you know and see if they can help you move on the big day, but don’t wait until the last minute. Consider sending out invitations a few weeks ahead of time, and let them know what you need help with. Be sure to include some small snacks and refreshments to show you care. This can be a great way to have fun while doing work at the same time.

3. Have the Right Equipment

Having the right equipment will make the biggest difference in the world. Before you even pack your first box, make sure you have enough bubble wrap, packing tape, boxes, furniture blankets and even the right moving vehicle. If you own a pickup truck or know someone who does, consider using a trailer like the ones found at Hillsboro Industries.

4. Donate

Moving is a great time to look over your belongings before you pack them and find out what you need in your new home. If you feel you’re not going to use these items while packing, then it’s best to start a pile to either donate or sell at a later time.

5. Be Organized

Since each room will have its own belongings, one great way to stay organized is by color coding your boxes. For example, you could have blue boxes for your kitchen items, while a basic brown box would be for the garage. Think of a creative way to separate your boxes, so when the time comes, you will know exactly where each box is going to go.

Moving on your own can be done if you take the time to organize and get help. By following these tips, there’s no reason your move won’t be as good as if you hired the professionals.
