How to Choose the Best Home Health Care Agency for the Elderly

October 8, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Having a friend or a relative with 65 years or more presents a responsibility that cannot to ignored. This group of people tend to be vulnerable to many health complications. Change of lifestyle among other social factors has been considered the main cause of the vulnerability. At that age, most of the old adults are alone since their children have probably moved out to their homes. In an occurrence of illness or injury, they may have a hard time moving around and doing their daily businesses.

6 Tips To Stay Stress-free When Taking Care Of Both Elderly Parents And Young Kids

To help them get back to their usual practices, purchasing home care services is a great thing to do. Just before you delve into purchasing the services, it is important that you have sufficient information about the service providers and what to expect from them. Maybe you have a sick elderly parent, or maybe your elderly spouse has injured him/herself. What should you look for in the home health care providers?

What is the difference between home and health home care?

The first thing to know is to understand the difference between home health care and home care services. You should not confuse the two services that almost relate to each other. Home services deals with the provision of housekeeping services such as cleaning, cooking, among other chores while home health services is medical oriented, that is, helping the elderly recover from an illness or injury. That does not however eliminate the possibility of providing some of the home care services.

The services provided are in line with the needs raised by the elderly person(s) taken care of. They are different forms of therapy like physical therapy, and quality practical nursing. In other cases, the services are extended to help the patient carry out the basic living activities like taking a bath, putting on clothes, movements, and eating. Other house care services included are housecleaning, cooking and other housekeeping services.

Checking quality

Just like purchasing goods, it is mandatory that you ensure the home health care services offered are of unquestionable quality. What therefore are the factors to consider? There are many agencies that provide home health care services. To ensure quality, their employees should be practising nurses, therapists and home aides with working licences. This is the basic factor to keep in check. Ensure that the practitioners are able to attend to the specific special needs of the patients like movements.

While doing a background check of the home health agency, there are some very fundamental factors to focus on. The first factor is their credibility. Check with the relevant authorities to ensure that their services are certified. They will be the people who will spend the most part of your relative or friend’s sick days. Among other qualities, they should be trustworthy, honest and respectable.

Check the duration for which the agency has been providing the services. Is it long enough to give them the required experience on how to handle the elderly? Do they have a rich medical background? Check if the agency has an updated licence that meets the required standards for providing Medicare. Also, factor in the method the agency uses to check the credibility of their employees.
