4 Ways to Make Sure You Are Prepared for a Natural Disaster

October 2, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Natural disasters can come out of nowhere, completely changing the course of your life. By preparing ahead of time, however, you can be sure that you and your family will have the best possible outcome at the end of a natural disaster. These four strategies will help make sure you are ready for natural disasters that might come your way.

 4-ways-to-make-sure-you-are-prepared-for-a-natural-disaster

Stock Food and Water

Two of the most important items in planning for a natural disaster are food and water. A good rule of thumb is to assume that you need to have at least one gallon of water per person in your family per day to last for at least three days. A larger supply of water can only ensure that your family will be prepared for a longer wait. When you’re preparing your food supply, make sure that you have both foods that you can prepare over a propane stove or open flame–and the means to cook them–and foods that can be eaten without needing to cook them.

Prepare a Bug-Out Bag

In the event of a serious natural disaster, you and your family may find yourselves needing to leave your home quickly. Assume that your bag will need to be light and easy to carry, but make sure that it contains everything you’ll need to survive in the event of a natural disaster. Prepare a bag for every member of your family and keep them in an area that’s easy to access if you have to leave your home in a hurry.

Prepare What You’ll Leave Behind

There’s no question that in the event of a serious emergency, you would put your family first. While you don’t want to think about the possibility that you won’t be there to help your family rebuild, it’s important to ensure that everything is in order with your estate. You need to indicate how you want your possessions to be taken care of, who you want to take custody of your children, and any other important information. If you need help planning your estate in Grand Rapids make sure you get help from a professional.

Lock Down Your Home

You can’t always prevent the damage that weather will do to your home. You can, however, lock it down to the best of your ability. Secure anything outside that can be torn away in high winds, lock all doors and windows, and activate your security system before you leave if at all possible. The more you can do, the better the odds that your home will weather the storm.

Natural disasters can strike at any moment. Being sure that your home and family are prepared in the event of an emergency can be the difference between a family that is easily able to handle the disaster and one that struggles to get everything back together. Make sure that your family is ready for whatever may come.
