5 Tips For Helping Your Teen Prepare For College

September 17, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Heading off to college is often one of the most dramatic transitions for teenagers. Between leaving home to adjusting to a busy school schedule, there are a number of changes that come with college. To ensure that your child succeeds, there are a few tips for parents to follow to help their teen prepare.

5-tips-for-helping-your-teen-prepare-for-college

Discuss School Costs

According to familycircle.com, you’ll need to sit down with your teen to discuss how they can access their spending money and if you’ll need to open a joint account to obtain the funds. You may also want to create a budget that they can follow to pay for their gas, groceries, and entertainment to ensure that they can manage their money well while living on their own for the first time.

Help Them Choose Their Major

One of the most important decisions that your teen will make in college is determining their major. Help them to evaluate their passions and skills so that they can find out what they are really passionate about. You may also want to tell them of all of the different possibilities. They may not know all of their options. You could suggest things like a communications degree, a journalism degree, or a radiologic degree. This will allow them to stay focused as they further their education and work towards their career.

Seek Financial Aid

Help your teen seek financial aid to cover their tuition through various programs and establishments that provide grants. Seek out their options and assist them with writing essays to cut down the cost of their college education. There are even tons of scholarships out there that your child could apply for. All you have to do is find them.

Discuss Temptations

College is often a time when many people experience freedom for the first time and enjoy experimenting with drugs, partying, and alcohol. According to childdevelopmentinfo.com, you can help your child stay focused by discussing the temptations that will likely be present and communicating the consequences that they may suffer from if they make bad decisions.

Find a Mentor

You can help your child prepare for college by finding a mentor who can help them through the process. Ask their college for an older student who can offer them guidance on how to excel in their courses or what to expect with living in the dorms. This will allow your teen to have a friend who can ease their nerves and be a support system.

Although transitioning to college can be difficult for both teens and their parents, there are several ways to help your child succeed and enjoy their new season of life. It can be challenging learning how to start school, but with your guidance they can achieve more with enough preparation.
