5 Ways to Show Your Elderly Parents You Care

September 15, 2016 by Pam Maynard

There may come a time in one’s life when you will look at your parents and come to the realization that they are no longer just old, they are now elderly. At all phases in life it is important to be close to your parents, but at this time it is of particular importance. Although some elderly parents may be blessed with good health, many others will start to see varying degrees of mental and physical deterioration. Now would be a good time to start thinking about ways to be there for them and to let them know that they are not alone in this fragile moment of their lives. Below are some suggestions to help you do just that.

5-ways-to-show-your-elderly-parents-you-care

Lend a Helping Hand

For many elderly people, something that was once considered a simple chore such as going out to do the groceries, can become a strenuous activity. Taking them once a week to do their groceries would help to alleviate some of that burden. Also, because some elderly may find driving increasingly difficult, driving them to and from their doctor appointments would be ideal.

Consider Assisted Living

If your elderly parent is finding it difficult to do things that were once routine, such as showering, cleaning and cooking, perhaps it may be time to look into an assisted living facility. Assisted living facilities are designed to provide everything from meals to laundry services and medical assistance if needed. Professionals, like those at The Scottish Home, know that many times assisted living facilities have social and recreational activities to keep residents busy. Consider talking to parents about this as a viable option for them.

Bring the Grandchildren Over

Family time is important and taking your kids to see their grandparents can be a real treat for both the grandkids and grandparents. There is a unique bond that can grow between a grandparent and a grandchild and many life lessons that can be learned. And there are health benefits for the grandmother as studies show that grandmothers who spend at least one day a week taking care of their grandkids lower their chances of developing dementia.

Book a Vacation for Them

After all our parents have done for us, what better gift can we give them than a well-deserved vacation. Consider booking a vacation for them that is age appropriate. A cruise would be ideal, as there are many that cater to the elderly and there is always a doctor on-board if the need should arise.

Call Them Regularly

Many of us have families and full-time jobs and other activities that keep us extremely busy. But finding the time to call your elderly parents is important. Take just a minute of your day, even if it is just to say a quick hello. This has the double bonus of helping to alleviate any worries you may have regarding their well-being and will let them know that you’re thinking about them.

It is important to remember that when we were small and helpless, our parents were there to pick us up and hold us and comfort us when we needed it. Showing our elderly parents how much we care for them by reciprocating the love and protection they gave to us will help show them how much we really care.
