Kids and Sun Safety: What Every Parent Should Know

As you go out and enjoy outdoor activities in the sun this upcoming Labor Day weekend, keep in mind that on average more than 350 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every hour. Those statistics are stunning, however, preventable!

Applying the proper sunscreen is the key. With so many options out there, how do you determine the best one? Be sure to look for active ingredients such as zinc oxide for starters. In addition, to narrow your search, look for sensitive skin, water-proof, or sport formulas. Besides these options, Neutrogena also offers lotions, sprays, or stick sunscreen.

All sunscreens are not created equal so be educated on what you’re purchasing. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measure how well sunscreens protect against sunburn that is caused by dangerous UVB rays. Did you know that UVB rays exist all year long? They are a major contributor to fine lines, deep wrinkles, and the uneven skin tone associated with premature aging.

  • According to a recent survey of more than 500 leading dermatologists, 99% agree that regular use of sunscreen helps lower skin cancer risk.
  • On average, more than 350 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every hour
  • As few as two painful sunburns during childhood significantly raises the risk of melanoma, compared to kids who have never been sunburned
  •  Just 1-2 severe and painful sunburns can increase the risk of melanoma by 40 percent

As parents, we need to develop healthy habits and set a positive example for our children. If kids see us eating right, taking care of our skin, and over all health, then they will take notice and begin to mimic our actions. Being a good role model would be the first step in sending the message that good health is important.

Secondly, would you join Mom Does Reviews and help spread the word and help us reach the goal of 15,000 video shares in support of Neutrogena’s Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation donation?

Neutrogena will donate $1 for every video share (up to 15,000) to the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation (CMPF) – a non-profit organization committed to preventing skin cancer, one child at a time.

In the video – Kristen Bell shares that it is never too early to have the dreaded “talk” with your kids. What’s one of her parenting tips to start the conversation about protection? Showcase safety firsthand. It’s quite cute and very funny actually. We know you will enjoy.
