No matter what part of the country you live in a natural disaster or extreme weather can happen. While most articles on the web suggest having an emergency supply of needs in your home is the most important — I think it is more important to have an emergency go-bag in your vehicle. Not only will you be prepared in a weather emergency, but you will also be prepared for emergencies while traveling as well.
How to Prepare a Weather Emergency Go-Bag for Your Vehicle
Lets start with the bag. Any type of bag will work but I prefer a bag that can be secured like a back pack. Back packs are compact and can fit into any trunk or back seat without taking up too much space. I recommend a pack that has a MOLLE style latching system so that pouches can be added to suit your family’s needs.
First-Aid Kit: Skip picking up a prepackaged kit and make a kit that is specialized for your family. Most of the ready-to-use kits don’t actually contain much of what you might need, and their bulky storage boxes will take up too much space in your go-bag.
Food and Water: Food and water are an necessity for survival. I recommend having an emergency water filter straw, simple Camelpak, and a supply of protein bars. MRE’s also great to pack in your bag since they are specifically designed for rough conditions.
Emergency Blanket: An emergency blanket could serve many purposes. If you live in cold weather and your car breaks down this blanket could be the difference between life or death. If you live in warmer climates it could be used as a tent or make shift shelter from rain. You could also use it as a water catcher in an emergency situation. Really, it is too important not to pack!
Solar Charger: Communication is important to try to get help. Everyone has a cell phone now, but if your phone dies and your car battery is dead, then you are in a tough spot. By having a solar charger in your bag you can charge your phone as many times as you need as long as you have sunlight.
