Tailgating with Kids in Six Easy Steps

September 1, 2016 by Victoria

We are just under a week away from the official start of Football Season and I’m already excited! It is one of the few sporting events that everyone in the family can enjoy together because football has something for everyone!

I love football season because it is a great excuse to spend extra time with friends and family — eating great food and playing our favorite games while tailgating with the kids!

Wait!  What?  Tailgating… with kids?

Yes!  Tailgating with kids!

Can you Tailgate with Kids?

The first time I mentioned tailgating with the kids to my husband he looked at me like I had two heads. And I agree. At first glance the safety concerns are so apparent that tailgating with them does seem like a recipe for disaster.  But just like any outdoor event for families, with careful planning, and a keen eye for safety, it can be done!

Tailgating with Kids in Six Easy Steps

Step 1: Get the lay of the land

Just like when you were in college, start asking around about which parking areas are going to have the “best” tailgating party.  The only difference is, this time, you are going to go in the opposite direction!

Once you have established the best parking lot location for your family friendly tailgating fun — tell your guests.

Step 2: Careful Planning!

Discuss with your tailgate group how many games you are thinking of attending this year.  Go ahead and plan the menu and games for each of your events during one planning session.  This will make the entire season go smoothly and ensure each game varies from the next!

Tip: Before you begin, read your team’s tailgating rules to avoid getting into trouble.

Step 3: Divide an Conquer!

Create two teams:  Team Setup and Team Kids. The responsibilities for each team are simple. One team should arrive first to take care of setup, and the second team should arrive closer to start — carpooling the youngest kids.

Tip:  Those who plan to bring the actual tailgates should arrive with “Team Setup.” Bring the teens in this group too to make use of their abundance of energy!

Step 4: Arrive Early

Arriving early is always suggested for any tailgating party, but it is vital for a successful family event.  You want to be the first group to grab parking along the green-space. This will give the kids plenty of room to play without the fear of them being in the way of parking lot traffic.

Step 5: Stake Your Claim!

Claim your area by roping off or spreading out your party supplies/games.  If you have “children at play” signs, use them too!

Step 6: Have Fun!

Once your area is setup, getting cooking and sit back with a cold soda until the fun begins!
