Smile Whiter: Brushing Techniques to Get Cleaner Teeth

August 29, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Ever since most of us were children, we have been told how important it is to brush our teeth. However, as time goes by, many of us start to slack off when it comes to using the proper brushing techniques. To get cleaner teeth and avoid various dental diseases, it’s imperative to stick with the proper brushing techniques we learned as children. If you’ve found yourself needing a refresher course when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy, here are some of the best brushing techniques recommended by experts.

Smile Whiter Brushing Techniques to Get Cleaner Teeth
Two Minutes, Twice a Day
According to virtually any dentist, the best way to assure clean teeth that are free of disease is to brush your teeth at least twice per day for a minimum of two minutes. To get the best results, the toothbrush should be at a 45-degree angle to the gums, then gently moved back and forth in tooth-wide strokes. To make sure all food particles get cleaned away, be sure to brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Don’t Forget the Tongue
While many people brush their teeth, few remember to brush their tongue as well. Doing so plays a very important role in dental health. Not only does it remove bacteria from the tongue’s surface, but it also helps keep your breath smelling fresh. After taking care of your teeth, be sure to take about one minute to give your tongue a brushing too.

Soft-Bristled Brushes
While toothbrushes come in soft, medium, and hard bristles, most dentists recommend using soft-bristled toothbrushes for best results. Since they are able to gently remove food particles and clean teeth without hurting the gums, they can reach all areas of the mouth in a safe and more gentle manner.

Replacing the Toothbrush
While this may seem obvious, most people fail to replace their toothbrush as often as they should. On average, a toothbrush should be replaced every four months, or sooner if the bristles become worn down.

Flossing
To guarantee all food particles and plaque have been removed between the teeth and along the gum line, be sure to floss between your teeth on a daily basis. By doing so, you’ll remove bacteria that can lead to tooth decay at some point along the way. Talk to a Stones River Dental clinic or your local dentist about how to teach kids this technique early on.

By using these tips and techniques, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis, it’s possible to keep your teeth and gums healthy and disease-free for many years.
