When Fall comes around I get excited. Not only does the weather start to cool off from the summer heat, but it’s mother natures way of reminding me that my favorite holiday is drawing near. Not the Holiday with pumpkin pie, but the one with pumpkin head monster. That’s right Halloween! I have visited the same events in my neighborhood for years, and now is the time to find a new way to spend my Halloween. This year I’m setting out to find the scariest places in the Northeast. Come with me!!
Here are my top five Halloween destinations of the Northeast.
Visit them — if you dare!
- Salem, Massachusetts: We have all grown up and heard the stories of the Salem witch trials and even learned about them in school. So, why not head the place were the true events happened? Catch all of the spooky events over the entire month of October. Join along for tours including the spots where the actual hangings took place.
- Sleepy Hollow, New York: Don’t let the breathtaking scenery fool you. This beautiful area is home to the none other than The Headless Horseman. Where the former home of the school teacher who disappeared after last seen being chased by the headless horseman himself — who is still said to be seen till this day near one of the nations oldest cemeteries!
- Villisca, Iowa: Home Of the Villisca ax murderer house. In the early 1920’s an entire family of eight where killed by an someone with an ax. The five children can still be heard crying in the halls and slamming doors. With my large family of eight, this stop may even be too scary for me!
- Louisville, Kentucky: Louisville, Kentucky is home to the Waverly Hills Sanatorium. The Sanatorium is one of the most haunted places in America. Local lore says that at least 63,000 people died during it’s operations from 1910-1962. You can take a tour or even search for paranormal activities. This makes Louisville a must on my Halloween to do list.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Some called it hell on earth. If you are looking for a place that you can walk the halls and hear people talking and laughing, even the ghost of the past, then the Eastern State Penitentiary is the spot to go. Founded in 1892, prisoners were tortured and starved to death. Some say you can still see these tortured souls today. Tour the facility and endure an interactive fright fest!
