4 Ways Parents Can Help Their Kids Struggling with Allergies

August 14, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Many children struggle with allergies. This includes seasonal and food allergies as well as significantly adverse reactions to insect bites, including bee stings. Parents have useful strategies available to them to assist their children who struggle with one type of allergy or another. Common allergies afflicting children include outdoor irritants like pollen, indoor irritants like pet dander, foods and other irritants like cigarette smoke.

4 Ways Parents Can Help Their Kids Struggling with Allergies
Control the Sources of Potential Irritants

A basic, and yet oftentimes overlooked, step a parent can take to protect their children from allergies is controlling the source of irritants. There are a growing number of research studies that conclude the interior environment of a resident is more polluted or contaminated than the out of doors, even in major cities, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Regular, thorough housecleaning is a necessary step in controlling the interior environment in a residence. However, this oftentimes is not enough when a child is afflicted with allergies that originate in the home environment. Engaging a professional cleaning service is an ideal course of action in many cases.

There a professional cleaning services that focus on these types of environmental issues. They not only do a surface cleaning but provide additional assistance designed to reduce the level of allergens and contaminants in a home.

Professional Intervention

A parent needs to be as proactive as possible when it comes to assisting their children in addressing allergies. One wise course is to seek professional intervention on behalf of their children through a clinic like Oak Brook Allergists.

Allergists are specially trained to address the needs of people with persistent allergies, including those associated with good, seasonal issues and insect bites and stings. Indeed, there are allergists that focus at least part of their practices on the special needs of children.

Keep a Diary

Determining the root cause of allergies is challenging in some circumstances. An extended period of time can be wasted trying to identify the source of an allergy. One step that a parent can take is to maintain a detailed diary associated with a child’s allergies. This journal is likely to prove very helpful in pinpointing the actual cause of a particular allergic reaction.

Investigate Other Venues

Children do not spend all their time at home. A parent is wise to be proactive and investigate other venues where a child spends his or her time, particularly school. The investigatory process should include a visit to the premises as well as speaking to others about the property and what exists at the location.

The more proactive a parent is in regard to children and allergies, the better the odds that an effective remedy will be realized. The proactive approach oftentimes necessitates a visit to an allergist.
