You Have to Fight for Your own Third Act as Well as Your Happy Ending #KuboEvent

August 13, 2016 by Becky

*Disclosure*I received airfare and accommodations for attending the Kubo and the Two Strings Press Junket, as always opinions are 100% my own.

While I was in LA for the Kubo and the Two Strings Movie Junket I had the awesome opportunity to be a part of an interview with Charlize Theron (Monkey), Matthew McConaughey (Beetle) and Art Parkinson (Kubo).  I didn’t realize when I found out that we would be interviewing them how insightful the interview would be. It was totally about the movie and yet so much more.

There was one thing that Charlize, Matthew, and Art all agreed upon and that was that a relationship with a parent or parents is very important. Charlize mentioned that she always grew up with directness.  Her mother always believed in not sugar coating the truth. Charlize agrees with being upfront and honest with her child, and the younger one in time.

Matthew talked about having conversations with your children in a way they understand.  You have to break it down for them.  He also believes in being direct and pulling no punches but in a way his kids can understand.  He identified with his character in the way that Beetle is a protector and yet he is Captain Fun and he (Beetle) also looks at himself as a hero.  This is how their Friday nights as a family usually are spent having fun and normally everything is answered with a yes.  One of the things Matthew liked the most about the movie was you always have to “fight for your own third act, you have to fight for your happy ending”.

Art Parkinson was about 10 or 11 years-old when he started voicing Kubo.  He is now 14 years-old but you wouldn’t know it by the way he talks.  He sounds like a very wise young man at his young age.  He spoke about his relationship with his Mom and how important it is to him.  This is one of the things he was able to identify with the most from the movie.  One of the interesting things about Art is that when he started voicing Kubo his voice was much different than it was at the end of taping Kubo.  He had to be able to compensate for that so Kubo didn’t sound different.

Our interview with Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, and Art Parkinson was so enjoyable.  They shared about their life as parents (Charlize & Matthew), and Art shared about the love he has for his Mom.  It almost felt like we were able to get a glimpse into their life and how parts of their life they saw in the movie.

Kubo and the Two Strings will be Arriving in theaters on Friday August 19th! Mark your calendars.

Kubo and The Two Strings is a heartwarming story told through amazing visual effects and a wonderful story line. It is a must watch film on 8/19.

Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure set in a fantastical Japan from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA. Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of “Game of Thrones”) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Akihiro (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), and Kameyo (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Awardwinner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara), to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family, and fulfill his heroic destiny.
