Over the past few years sensory play has come to the forefront of preschool education. Educators are starting to understand that it isn’t just autistic or children who have sensory processing disorders who need it — all children need to learn how to identify their senses. All children can greatly benefit from sensory play.
The thing about sensory play that I love the most is: almost anything can be used and the ideas are as endless as textures and smells. Their favorite toys can become tools for sensory play. Standard baking dough can be used for sensory play. Bath toys can be used during sensory play!
Speaking of! That’s what our focus is today! I am going to tell you how we are using Teach My Preschooler Bathtime Spelling kit during sensory play!
The Teach My Preschooler Bathtime Spelling kit comes with foam letters, waterproof writing sheets, bath book, and washable bath crayons — all of which are perfect for our project this week!
With the help of moistened water beads, I took our bathtime letters and hid them inside a shallow bowl. I encouraged my littles to reach in, feel the beads, get their hands a little wet, and grab the foam letters.
Note: This is why using bathtime toys is great for water bead sensory activities. The letters are designed to get wet and it won’t harm them!
My daughter couldn’t wait to dig in and pull all of the letters out! Afterwards, she placed them on our tabletop white board — and they stuck perfectly — just like on the wall of a bathtub!
I added the double sided spelling mats to our water bead bowl, moistened them slightly, and stuck them to our white board for an added layer of learning for Baby Girl. This allowed her to then match the letters she was pulling out of the sensory bowl with the letters before her.
Baby Girl loved the spelling mats so much, she quickly grabbed her bath crayon to trace the letters! I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to see her taking to writing so well! Plus, fine motor AND sensory play at the same time? What homeschooling mom wouldn’t get excited about that?
Mom’s Thoughts
I think our sensory activity using Teach My was a big success. My daughter enjoyed every piece of the Bathtime Spelling Kit and asked to continue playing longer!
The foam letters dried very quickly and didn’t require any specific attention from me to do so. I laid the spelling mats across the top of our table top white board to dry and they were ready to be packed away within thirty minutes. The bath book dried on its own without having to be wiped down. Everything returned to the storage bag without a problem.
I am impressed with the educational kits created by Teach My. My little ones have a lot of fun “playing” with them and I am tickled to see them learning through play. I strongly recommend ANY and ALL of Teach My products to other families.
