5 Ways to Assist Your Parents in Their Later Years

July 23, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Watching your parent’s physical and mental abilities slowly decline can be sad, considering you’ve known them all your lives as strong, independent people. It can also be a challenge to support them, emotionally and financially. Many elders would like to stay at home, meaning that current and future caregivers need to prepare now. Here are five things you should consider when caring for aging parents.

5 Ways to Assist Your Parents in their Later Years

Food Options

Your parents need to eat healthy, so how are they going to do it? Driving may be difficult for them, making it harder to get groceries. You could show your parents how to shop for groceries online, allowing them to keep their independence. But if they’re not capable, you can order groceries for them. Companies like Meals on Wheels offers daily meal drop-offs for the elderly.

Home Preparedness

Do your best to figure out what could pose a hazard for your parents in their house. Changes can include rails to prevent falls, lower pantry shelves for easy access, more lighting, and removal of floor hazards. A home security system could be a good investment as well.

Healthcare Measures

Medical regimens assigned to your parents need to be kept up. Be sure to stay in contact with their main healthcare provider. Always inquire about your parent’s treatment, whether it be checking their schedule for doctor’s appointments or looking over their daily exercise regimen. This would also be a good time to look into life insurance advisement for your parents in case of an unfortunate event, or to just make sure you and the rest of the family are not left to take on outstanding expenses.  Some companies, like Senior Leads, know that taking care of finances is an important part of life, no matter what stage you’re in.  Getting help with this sort of thing is worth it.

In Case of an Emergency

When a fall or other accident occurs, every second counts. A personal emergency response system (PERS) gets the elderly help at the push of a button. The PER system also includes GPS capability, which can locate your elderly parent in case of an emergency, automatic fall detection and two-way phone communication.

Emotional Needs

It’s important that your parents continue to have a social life. The risk of injury increases greatly if they feel lonely and have no one to interact with. Engaging activities and hobbies should still be a part of their daily lives. A need for purpose and belonging is still an important part of their lives.

With new advances in technology, caring for your elderly parents has been made significantly easier. You and your parents can now rest easy knowing that they’re safe and can maintain their independence even when you’re not around.
