Generally, in our society we think more about outdoor air pollution rather than indoor air quality. What if I told you, you can test the indoor air quality of your home or office and have the results with peace of mind in just a few weeks? Would you be willing to test it?

We recently performed an indoor air quality check through Home Air Check. Our review kit arrived containing two sample tubes and a sampling pump. The glass sample tubes are used to collect air samples for each test ordered. The pump is the tool that is used to pull the air sample into the sample tube.
The entire air collection process was simple. I set up the first test, HAC- Formaldehyde in our dining room area on top of the piano. I pulled the piano out from the wall and allowed the air test to pull from the center of the room. This test only took 20 minutes. I set a timer and once it ended, put the caps back on both ends of the tube and filled out the date and time on the Home Air Check Testing Form.
Next, I set up the sample pump along with the sample tube for the next test, HAC-VOC in the living room. I placed the pump on top of the TV stand and set my timer for 2 hours. As before, when the timer ended I recorded the date and time and repackaged the sample tube with pump.
The package comes with a prepaid return slip so you can drop it in the mail to return the samples the same day! I received an email from the company when my results were received with an estimated date to expect my results.
My Results
Without going into great detail, my results were a little concerning. From low, moderate, elevated, to high, my Formaldehyde test results showed elevated levels. My report shared health effects of Formaldehyde exposure and sources that cause the levels to be increased. I learned the paneling is a contributor to high levels. Our rental home has paneling throughout. So our only way to correct this problem is to move!
The VOC (mold) test was a little more reassuring. (a little) From low, moderate, elevated, to severe, we tested in the lower moderate range. Again, the report shared health effects and causes. I have determined that the cause is condensation around our windows. I have noticed that we have a lot of condensation around windows in the colder months. I have found mold hiding in the cracks before. It’s time for another deep cleaning, I guess! In addition, we have an ensuite that does not have an exhaust fan. I’m sure that compounds the problem.
