Spending Well: How to Create a Family Budget With a Little Wiggle Room

June 18, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Creating a budget for your family is a fantastic idea whether it is to save for that much needed vacation, or simply to put away money for a rainy day. Some may feel it is impossible to save, such as single parents or one income families, but that is simply not the case. With a few tweaks to your daily routine you can easily build quite a nice nest egg without a whole lot of hassle.

Shop Wisely

Coupons are a fantastic way to save money, just be sure you truly need what you are buying. Do not purchase that box of cereal just because it is two dollars; if you don’t eat it, it is money wasted. But, perhaps your favorite soup or baking mix is on special, grab a few at a time until the next sale rolls around. This will save you money in the long run on things that you will use, and won’t spoil soon.

Put a Few Dollars Away Each Paycheck

Although it may not seem like much, five dollars here and there can really add up over time. Set up a savings account that you won’t touch and watch the dollars accumulate. If your bank offers interest your account balance can really skyrocket, so be sure to keep it full.

Child Support for the Single Parent

While this may not always be possible, child support is often the key for a single parent’s monetary woes to subside. A paycheck can only spread so far without some help, and while many are too prideful to ask, it could be essential to providing your child with the best possible lifestyle. Child support payments should be mandated by the court, but make sure to consult a family law attorney to be informed of all your legal options. Being informed can mean the difference between your child having a hot meal on the table or going hungry.

Don’t Splurge

As tempting as that cup of Starbucks is, it is not a necessity. Do not waste your hard earned money on frivolous things that are easily replaced. A lunch out every workday can add up quickly; that is possibly over fifty dollars a week gone that could have been saved. Make yourself a fresh cup of coffee in a travel mug, and pack a crisp salad for lunchtime. Your waistline and wallet will be thanking you in no time.

Most of these tips do not require too much time on your part, just a bit of creative thinking. Stretching that budget does not have to be a chore, and once you see your savings increase, you will be motivated to keep at it!
