4 Ways That Early Childhood Education Can Influence Development

May 12, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Anyone can readily identify a constellation of different practices that can influence a child’s development. For example, a child’s diet, a child’s involvement in sports, and the education level of a child’s parents are all factors that can influence a child. However, early childhood education is one of the largest factors that can influence the development of a child. Here are four reasons why.

Phonemic Awareness

Early childhood education exposes children to the idea that sounds can be represented through letters. This is a principle adults take for granted, but it is the bedrock principle for all future literacy activities. Children that take part in early childhood education learn this principle at a young age. The result is that these children are often able to become fluent readers much faster than their peers.

Pro-Social Behavior

Early childhood education allows a child to interact with additional adults and a collection of peers. This teaches a child pro-social behavior. A child learns how to work in groups, follow instructions, and how to delay gratification. This prepares a child for school, but it also reduces anxiety. These pro-social lessons are often difficult to obtain at home.

Early Intervention

Early childhood education allows a host of educational specialists to observe a child. For example, these specialists can uncover speech and behavior disorders. This allows families to intervene on any developmental disorders while the child is young. Interventions are much more likely to be successful when implemented early. Through early childhood education, potential problems are caught early and can be begin to be corrected immediately. Professionals can also give suggestions for parents to implement at home.

Counteracts Poverty

Early childhood education is a great resource for counteracting the influence of poverty in a child’s life. For example, it frees up the parent to work while the child is at school. Moreover, early education institutions also allow the child to be in a literacy-rich environment that may not be present at home. Many homes do not have books or educational materials due to poverty. Early childhood education helps make sure all children are able to be exposed to these items regardless of their parent’s income tax bracket.

These are just four ways early childhood education can influence a child. The influence of early childhood education is overwhelmingly supportive of positive child development. Consider seeking early childhood education opportunities for your child. Additionally, you can help support your own community’s efforts to bring to early childhood education to every child.
