Secrets to Getting Great Senior Pictures This Year

April 30, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Senior portraits are a rite of passage, and in the digital and social media age, seem to be more and more important. It’s an exciting time to showcase your personality and an opportunity to capture a set of pictures you can look back on with fondness. Getting ready for these pictures can also be a bit overwhelming. Take a look at these secrets to getting great senior pictures this year. Knowing what to expect will help you focus on enjoying your experience.

Secrets to Getting Great Senior Pictures This Year

Don’t Get Your Hair Cut the Day Before
Getting a haircut at the last minute is a mistake many seniors make. Keep in mind that you’ll need a few days to let your hair fill in and settle a bit. It’s also not a good idea to choose a brand new style that doesn’t seem like you. Remember that your senior portraits are meant to be a reflection of the person you have become throughout your educational career. You want to be sure you feel comfortable on picture day.

Go Natural with Your Makeup
Along the lines of being yourself, it’s important to choose an everyday look for your makeup. There’s no need to apply cosmetics like you’re going out for a night on the town or going to prom. Your friends and family will want to recognize your individuality in the photos. Along the same lines as makeup, if you decide to have your eyebrows done, or have an Art of Dentistry Institute whiten your teeth, give about a week in between the appointment and pictures to be sure nothing stands out too much or detracts from the photos.

Plan Your Clothing Choices
Ask your photographer how many clothing changes are recommended. Choose a solid colored, simple outfit for your formal studio photo so that your clothing doesn’t compete with the mood of the photo, or the background. You can wear a casual, everyday outfit that’s comfortable for your outdoor pictures. Try to avoid red or white, as they tend not to photograph well outside. Blues and earth tones are always good choices.

Coordinate Your Props
Props are usually permitted and encouraged for senior pictures. Just be sure to plan accordingly for them. If you want your photo taken with your new car, be sure the photographer is informed ahead of time. It’s also recommended to coordinate the color of your clothes to your prop of choice, whether it be a car, a pet, or even a friend.

Bring Inspiration
Bring pages from magazines, drawings, or notes to let the photographer know any ideas you have about personalizing your session. This will help to ensure your personality shines through, and that you get the end result you desire.

Finally, be sure to show up early to finalize any details and to set up all your stuff. Bring a pal or a parent to help set your nerves at ease, and just have fun with your photo shoot.
