Tips for Teaching Kids the Right Way to Brush Their Teeth

April 28, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Brushing your teeth is crucial not only for general dental health, but overall health as well. In order for your children to develop the right healthy habits, be sure to begin teaching them at an early age. When they are around five or six years old is the ideal time to begin teaching them to brush their teeth themselves. An early start is the surest way for your children to maintain healthy dental habits for life.

Tips for Teaching Kids the Right Way to Brush Their Teeth

Timing
Always encourage your kids to brush their teeth at least twice a day. The morning and the night are the best times to do this, and make sure they use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Over-brushing is a real concern, and can cause enamel erosion and sensitivity issues if your children use a brush that is too rough for their teeth.
Technology
It is always a good idea to help your kids by giving them battery-powered toothbrushes. These are particularly effective because they perform the recommended brushing motions themselves, making brushing easier and more fun. They also come in a variety of popular styles and types for customization. Just make sure kids are mature enough to use them properly before investing.
Examples
Leading by example is always important too. Make sure you hold yourself to the same brushing standards and try to brush at the same time as kids. Children often imitate their parents, so brush your teeth every morning and night if you want your children to as well. You can make teeth brushing a family activity which encourages you and your children to brush your teeth at the same time, and can allow you to make sure your kids are brushing their teeth correctly.
Extra Hygiene
In addition to brushing, it is recommended for you to encourage your children to practice other hygienic activities. After brushing, it is a good idea to teach them to floss their teeth. Flossing can be just as important as brushing, as it prevents your kids from storing deposits between their teeth that may harm their dental health. Similarly, it is recommended for your children to learn how to use mouthwash after they brush. Just like brushing, these two activities can become something that you and your family can do together, teaching your kids the correct technique for the best results.

Taking your kids to see Periodontal Specialists is never a bad idea either, as they can always share their own tips and techniques to help your kids have a more enjoyable time brushing. Start early and be sure to encourage healthy habits to ensure your kids do not have to worry about dental problems in the future.
