DIY Wind Chimes Spring #Crafts

Love the sound of wind Chimes?

Make your own!

I love the sounds wind chimes make.  There is nothing better than being outside and hearing their gentle sounds in the breeze.  I decided to make my own because it would be fun and I had an idea.  Of course upon hunting out parts I had to change my idea a few times.  I hunted through thrift stores to find random pieces to add to my creation.  I found a wreath of bells and a ornate wire ring that sits around a candle.  I also found some bangle bracelets.  Then at the craft store I bought some keys and crystals.  I had some beads and paint, plus some odds and ends from my husband’s spare parts drawer in the garage.  With all that collected plus some string I was ready to start.

First off, I am not a fan of gold, so I spray painted the candle decoration black.  I had to flip it a few times to get good coverage.  This was to be my base where I would hang the rest of my items from.   I painted the balls on it a few different colors and added glitter.  I also spray painted the nuts and washers and put glitter on them too.  I figured the glitter would help catch the light from the sun.

Next was the fun part.  I strung all the different elements together in pretty ways.  I tried to make sure it had a crystal or two on every string to really catch the sunlight.  I also added at least one metal item to each string to get the sound I desired.  Once a string was long enough I tied it to the black base.  I made them all slightly different lengths, and different in looks.  I was not going for symmetry or matching, but I could have.

I had four strings hanging, but it did not look balanced enough. I therefore set out making a fifth string.  I added that one to balance my wind chimes out.  Lastly I tied three strings evenly spaced on the top to form the hanger.  Now my finished wind chime is hanging on my porch.

I had enough materials to make two, so my son decided to make one out of the bell wreath.  He liked the gold, so he did not paint his.  He added stings hanging off it and it turned out very nice. It was also fun to spend the time creating our DIY wind chimes together.
