Protecting Your Family’s Health: Five Tips For A Healthier Lifestyle

April 11, 2016 by Pam Maynard

The things we do every single day may seem inconsequential, but, over time, they have the most impact in the long term. So, adopting some good habits and sticking with them consistently can go a long way towards protecting your family’s health. Here are some of the best habits to adopt:

5 Tips For A Healthier family

Walk More

Studies show that every minute of exercise adds about seven extra minutes to your life expectancy. Additionally, walking is one of the best exercises for getting excess weight off and keeping it off. Walking is also one of the easiest forms of sustained exercise. Even people who are not athletically inclined can add more walking to their day by just parking a little farther out than usual or walking to a nearby store instead of driving. It is easy to incorporate more walking into your life and it can be an opportunity to foster great conversation with your spouse or kids.

Eat Healthier

You are what you eat. Establishing good eating habits at an early age is one of the best ways to keep your kids healthy for life. Read labels, shop for good quality produce and other fresh foods, and cook from scratch. Make family dinner a tradition and you will strengthen family bonds while making sure the entire family gets a good, healthy meal at least once a day, every day.

Floss

Flossing not only protects your dental health, it may protect your long term heart health. When left to grow unchecked, the same bacteria that grow between your teeth may damage your heart health. Thus, brushing and flossing consistently can add years to your life by protecting you from heart disease. It’s also important to visit a professional at Smith Family Dental regularly to catch problems early.

Less Is More

When in doubt, throw it out. Do not let your cupboards and closets fill up with clutter that you will never use. Instead of spending all your time cleaning, just arrange to have fewer things. This will cut down on dust and germs and give you more time to spend with family and loved ones.

Go Green

Switch to nontoxic cleaners. Go with low VOC carpeting or wood and tile floors. These seemingly small insults to the body add up. Over time, they can seriously undermine your health.

Looking out for your health can become a habit. Just as bad habits are hard to break, good habits are too. Building a life based on healthy habits can become a self-sustaining means to stay as healthy as possible.
