Repair or Replace? How to Know When It’s Time to Let Go of Old Appliances

March 23, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Any old appliance, whether it be your refrigerator, washing machine or heating equipment, may fail to work efficiently sometimes. You could face the crucial question: Is it wise to spend money and time to repair my machine or do I just replace it? The decision on whether to repair or replace depends on many factors.

Repair or Replace - How to Know When It's Time to Let Go of Old Appliances

Consider the Cost of Repair

The repair cost for most machines is usually 20-30% of the buying price. Consider the cost of repair against the price of a new appliance. Choose the repair option only if you can make significant savings. The repair person may fix the mechanical hitch at a good cost. Repairs can also save you the time you spend shopping and comparing the prices of new appliances.

Know Your Appliances’ Life Expectancy

Supposing the cost of repair is half the price of your appliance and the appliance is seven or eight years old. According to estimates by the National Association of Home Builders, the life expectancy of a dishwasher is 9 years, refrigerator 13 years, deep freezer 11 years, gas oven 15 years, washing machine 10 years, and dryer 13 years.

It makes no sense to spend more than half the cost of a new appliance if the damaged equipment is nearing its life expectancy. Buy new if the replacement, the cost of transport, installation fees, product disposal, and taxes appear attractive.

The Trouble of Persistent Mechanical Problems

The appliances that experience the first mechanical problem are worth fixing. However, if the equipment presents a headache quite often making you spend a substantial amount of money regularly, that is enough signal that you need to let go.

Additional Features in New Appliances

Your old equipment may not have the newest features available on the market. Repairs can never modernize your machines. Rather than spend money on rectifications while you still have a strong desire for something trendy, dispose of your old appliances for the latest inventions available.

When you need to repair an emergency appliance, like an automatic generator, it’s best to get the repair made as quickly as possible to minimize the risk of downtime during power outages. A specialist with Lowry Services: Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Cooling says automatic generators need to be carefully maintained to ensure they function during an outage. Keep a list of all the repairs and replacements of essential and emergency appliances and be sure to update it regularly—this way, you’ll know when something requires your attention long before disaster strikes.

What about Energy Savings?

The existing appliances could be the cause of your high energy bill. A modern refrigerator, for instance, uses about half the electricity of one that is 20-years old. Find out if you will save on the energy costs and whether you can receive tax credits when you buy an energy-efficient appliance.

However, remember that new appliances may come with some hidden costs, such as the remodeling of your kitchen to accommodate bigger equipment. Choose to replace your gadgets if there is no other option other than to buy new. Otherwise, professional repair is the best option for extending the life of an appliance.
