Little Masters of Disaster: How to Help Keep your Kids from Turning your Home into a Mess

March 20, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Any parent knows how challenging it can be to keep their little ones from turning the house into a disaster. From playing with crayons to toy blocks, kids are known to create messes wherever they go. To prevent having a disaster in each room of your home, there are a number of tips to follow to maintain a clean and tidy space.

Little Masters of Disaster How to Help Keep your Kids From Turning your Home into a Mess
Avoid Giving Access to All of the Toys

Many parents make the mistake of allowing their children to have complete access to all of their toys, which creates a bigger mess and can cause kids to lose interest in the items. Rotate the toys out every few months to limit how many toys they drag out each day and to maintain their interest in the products that they already own.

Limit the Play Area

Instead of giving your children free reign of the house when they want to play, limit where you allow them to make a mess to prevent a complete disaster. Consider designating a certain room of the home for play time or allowing them to make a mess only in the living room, which will make it easier to clean up.

Use Storage Bins

Group like items together in storage bins, which will make it easy to put all of the toys away each day and allow each item to have a home in a specific area. You can also use Quantum Storage bins for small parts and pieces that would otherwise get lost in large toy chests. Label the bins to make it easy to determine where to place each item and stack them vertically to conserve space.

Keep Paint and Markers Outside

You may want your child to become an artist with their drawing and painting skills, but it’s important to keep the mess outside. Although some people allow their children to express their creativity in the kitchen, this can make it easy for cupboards and floors to be colored on when you look away. Keep the paint and markers outside but allow crayons to be used in designated areas to prevent your little ones from destroying the home.

It may seem impossible to prevent your kids from turning your home upside down throughout the day, but there are practical ways of controlling their mess and protecting your space. With the right tools and rules established, you can enjoy a clean home that doesn’t feel overrun by your toddlers.
