5 Questions to Ask Yourself If You’re Considering Adoption

March 9, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Adoption is a wonderful way to expand your family, but there are many details about the process that you might not know. Here are five questions you should ask yourself if you are considering adoption.

5 Things to do While Going through the Adoption Process

How flexible am I?

Many people who are interested in adoption have specific requirements about their future child. Some people only want to adopt a child of a certain gender or background, while others refuse to adopt a child with special needs. It is difficult to place children in families with a long list of restrictions. If you can be flexible, you will be able to adopt a child much quicker.

Should I consult a public or private agency?

Public agencies are run by the government, whereas private agencies are licensed by the state and are often non-profits. Both agency styles have their benefits and weaknesses, but either one could be the right fit for you. Private agencies tend to be more expensive, but the waiting process takes less time. Public agencies are often cheaper, but there is more paperwork involved so it can take longer to get your placement.

Do I need an attorney?

If you are planning to adopt a child from another country it may be a good idea to meet with an immigration lawyer in Los Angeles. This will ensure that you get the correct legal answers to all of your questions about bringing a child home from overseas.

Do I want an open or closed adoption?

There are many pros and cons for open and closed adoptions, but in the end it is something you will have to decide for yourself. Some parents-to-be prefer closed adoptions so their child will only know their adoptive parents, but others prefer open adoptions in case their child has any health issues in the future that would require a biological donor.

How will I discuss adoption with my friends and family?

If you are the first person in your friend group or family to adopt a child, you may not be sure how to discuss it. Growing your family is a big step, so it is important to be able to talk it over with those who care about you.

Now that you have learned more about adoption, you can take that next step in the process. There are millions of children waiting for loving parents just like you!
