Six Moving Day Mistakes to Avoid

March 6, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Moving can be very stressful. Not only is moving to a new place intimidating, but physically moving all of your possessions to the new area can be a real undertaking. To save yourself from some of that stress, you should take steps to avoid certain common moving day mistakes.

Six Moving Day Mistakes to Avoid

Make Sure Utilities Are Working at Your New Place
A month beforehand, make sure to call the power company, phone company, cable company, internet provider, etc. to make sure everything will be connected when you arrive at your home. You might also want to test to see if everything works before the move. Calling an air conditioning repair company like Cape Fear Air Conditioning & Heating Co., Inc. might be needed unless you want to be in sweltering heat while unpacking for the next few days.

Label and Organize
While you may think you know what box you placed everything into, you will most certainly forget by the time you get your stuff to your new place. Make sure to label every box, and keep things neatly organized. It will save you a lot of frustration later. Have your important, need-to-have items stored on top, and be sure to have a backpack or overnight bag full of essentials so you don’t end up in a mess of boxes later.

Take Measurements
Before you move, you should take measurements of your new home to ensure that everything will fit where you think it will. If your couch does not fit in through the front door, that could be a serious problem.

Hire a Mover Early
You should hire a moving company at least six weeks before your move. Movers can book up quickly, especially during the summer when they are the busiest. Hire early if you want to save money and avoid the local rush.

Back Up Your Computer Files
Another common mistake occurs when a computer hard drive is damaged during transit. The damage may not even be visually obvious. The data could be wiped by a strong electromagnetic signal. Make sure to back up all your important files and have hardcopies of pictures and files you’ll need later.

Finish Packing Well Before Moving Day
If you are still packing things on moving day, you have already made a mistake. Chances are, you won’t finish in time. Always make sure to finish packing a few days ahead of time to be sure. It can save you a lot of stress since being in a rush can lead you to accidentally lose or break your possessions.

Overall, moving takes a lot of preparation and care. Make sure you take the time to do the entire process correctly. It can save you from a lot of stress and frustration down the road.
