How to Help Your Child Transition from Glasses to Contacts

March 5, 2016 by Pam Maynard

More and more kids are making the switch from glasses to contact lenses. Contacts are more suitable for sports, less likely to be misplaced, and can help many kids improve their self-confidence. Here are some tips to help your child make the switch a little simpler and more enjoyable.

How to Help Your Kids Through the Transition of Glasses to Contacts
Go to the Source

While it is convenient for parents to purchase contacts online, this is not the best choice for children, especially if it is their first time wearing contact lenses. An eye doctor will make sure you get lenses that fit your child’s eyes and prescription. Professionals at places like the Spectacle Shoppe, Inc. will also walk you both through the process of inserting and removing the lenses and discuss proper care and maintenance. This can help make you both more comfortable with your new routine.

Know the Ropes

Ensure your child understands how properly insert and remove their contacts. Remind them to take them out before bed or other activities when they may not be suitable, and show them how to properly handle them to avoid damage. They may need your help or supervision for the first few weeks, but if you are patient, the results are a more confident kis.

Transition Slowly

It may take time for your child to get used to wearing contacts. Start out slowly by having them wear their glasses for the majority of the day, and then switch to contacts for short periods. Begin by wearing them at home where you can easily assist or correct any problems they might have. Increase the time your child wears contact lenses as they become more comfortable with how they feel and more confident in how to maintain them.

Teach Proper Contact Care

It is important to handle, clean, and store contact lenses correctly to avoid infection and eye problems. Stress to children the importance of washing their hands before putting their lenses in or taking them out. Ensure they understand the maintenance regime and has all the necessary supplies. Watch them at first until you are confident they are caring for their lenses appropriately.
Conversely, you may wish to try daily disposable lenses, like clarti 1 day lenses, for your child. These are affordable and free your child from the responsibility of daily maintenance. A reputable glasses shop should have a variety of options, and your optometrist should be able to suggest one that fits your needs.

Contacts can be a great option to help correct vision problems in kids. Care and diligence will ensure a successful transition from glasses to contacts for the whole family.
