Considering Private School? How to Choose the Best One For Your Child

March 3, 2016 by Pam Maynard

There are more than 30 million private schools across the nation, and enrollment in these facilities has recently experienced an influx due in part to cuts in public school funding. While the investment in your child’s education is certainly one worth making, it’s important to understand that private schooling can be expensive, averaging around $18,000. As you explore your options, there are a few things you should consider to best ensure you choose the ideal private school for your child.

Consider the Future

It can be easy to get caught up in the moment, but you should always keep the future in mind when choosing a private school. For example, if a particular school focuses on nurture during the primary years, check and see what’s in store as your child advances on to middle and high school as things could quickly become more competitive. Understanding how things will change can make a big difference in how your child will be able to adapt as they move forward.

Don’t Get Caught Up In Prestige

Many parents make the mistake of narrowing their options down to only the most prestigious and competitive schools for their children. While their intentions are good, this often results in the enrollment in a school for which their children simply aren’t a good fit. Whether the curriculum is too difficult or easy, these challenges could put limitations on your child that could hinder their future success, so always consider whether they are a good fit for any particular school.

Make Time for Visits

While the Internet has made it easier than ever to explore the many options available, making a personal visit is still the best way to properly analyze them. Keep in mind this can be an extensive process as you must make time in your busy schedule to meet with various schools and staff members, but this is an investment that will pay off in the long term.

Get the Details

Many private schools have policies and procedures which differ from public schools, so it’s important to know about these before enrolling. Uniform standards should also be discussed ahead of time to save both you and your child time and frustration. Some private schools will order custom school attire and SKG workwear uniforms and clothing, so be sure you ask about where to purchase your child’s uniform before the school year starts. The details are essential, so don’t overlook these when investigating potential private schools.

Understanding Financial Aid Requirements

Understanding that private school can be pricey, it’s important to ask about possible financial aid packages. Many private schools offer them, and you don’t want to miss out on the chance to save money while ensuring your child gets the best possible education. It’s important to carefully consider all the requirements and make sure your application is submitted on time as strict deadlines are often enforced. Just one seemingly insignificant oversight can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need any kind of clarification.

An Education That Counts

As a parent, you’re concerned with the future well-being of your child, and private school can give them the advantage they need for success and happiness. This is certainly an investment that pays off. Just as you would when considering retirement and stock options, however, you must take time and patience as you weigh your choices when it comes to selecting the best private school for your child. By following these tips, you can be on your way to doing just that.
