4 Home Disasters You Can Avoid with Care

February 21, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Tragedy can strike any home, but there are steps you can take to protect your family. If you keep up with maintenance and repairs, you can reduce the risk of fire, flood, and other disasters. Here are a few things you may want to pay closer attention to so that you can keep your family and property safe.

4 Home Disasters You Can Avoid with Care

Check the Dryer Vent

You may clean the lint trap regularly, but you’d be amazed at how much lint can collect inside the exhaust vent. In addition to choking off the airflow for your unit so it has to run longer, you’re also increasing the risk of a fire inside the lines. Use a shop vacuum to reach into the dryer hose and keep it clean, or have a company take care of it for you.

Clean Gutters at all Times

Most people recognize the importance of cleaning out the gutters, but they may not realize that they can prevent problems by keeping the debris out of these channels in the first place. Before you spend another day scooping rotting leaves out of your gutters, have a company install protective covers that will only let the water through. You’ll protect your foundation and keep basement leaks away.

Tune up the Furnace

The furnace is always there for you when you need it, but this appliance needs regular attention to ensure that it keeps running properly. If your furnace goes out during the cold winter months, you could wind up dealing with damage from burst pipes. You also don’t want to go through a summer heat wave without your air conditioner. You can avoid the problems completely by having the furnace tuned up annually by Christian Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. or a similar servicer. It will run better, and you can minimize the risk of costly repairs.

Address Electrical Quirks

People may joke about flickering lights being caused by ghosts, but the fact is that most electrical quirks have a far more frightening cause. Bad wiring, worn out systems, and defective circuits can lead to fires, so you’ll want to have them fixed as soon as possible. Watch out for issues like lights that flicker when an appliance is turned on, a crackling sound when you flip a switch, and damaged outlets.

The cost of any of these repairs is far lower than the tragedy that can happen if the issues are neglected. It’s an easy way to keep your family safe and ensure that you won’t fall victim to an avoidable disaster.
