Father’s Day Countdown- Chess anyone?

June 11, 2012 by Pam Maynard

A game of Giant Chess for Father’s Day!

Guest post by Hannah

Father’s Day is a lovely day for celebrations and fun, but thinking of gift ideas for these beloved fathers is never easy. Flowers and cute cuddly toys don’t really cut it, which makes it far more complex than Mother’s Day, and unfortunately it always gets to the point where socks or a garden trowel seem like the best options.

However, with the summer sunshine that (all being well) will be here on June 17th, a brilliant way of avoiding the expansion of Dad’s sock drawer or the cluttering of his garden shed, is to combine his present with a great activity for the whole family…

Traditional family games have been popular for many years, with the famous Jenga, Connect 4 and Chess filling people’s cupboards all over the world.  However, they have now been massively enlarged to create some brilliantly giant versions that are suitable for the garden as well as in the home!

Giant Chess is bundles of fun, no matter how young or old the members of the family are! Dad will love having the whole family together, all shouting ‘check mate’, while moving around these huge pieces that used to be fifty times smaller. Having fun in the garden is a great way to celebrate Dad’s achievements, while spending quality time together and making the most of the beautiful sunshine!

If the sun is shining brightly, we’re feeling slightly dozy, and Chess is taking a little too much brain power; Giant Draughts can be a fantastic alternative. Using the same board as Chess, the games are interchangeable (perfect excuse to treat ourselves – or Dad – to both!) and the rules are wonderfully simple. Both the Chess and Draughts sets are chunky and proud, and require a bit of effort to move them around the board, meaning the winning feels even more momentous!

Adding a tasty BBQ and a few friends will turn the occasion into a fabulous summer party, and the Giant garden games will ensure the guests are occupied for hours!
