5 Dental Care Tips for Pregnant Mothers

January 24, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Visiting a dentist for checkups is not a fun activity for anyone, let alone if you are expecting a baby. Pregnancy can bring about several issues in a woman’s mouth ranging from bleeding to cavities. You are more likely to develop severe plaque due to the raging hormones in your body too. Furthermore, if you do not maintain good oral hygiene, you risk infecting the baby.

1.       Regular checkups

Firstly, go for regular checkups. This way you can keep track of the changes in your mouth. Most women are prone to periodontal disease which can cause the gums to become extremely sensitive or inflamed. Additionally, check on the dental treatment financing plan that your doctor offers you. This way you can attendadditional checkups without worrying about payment. Some physicians will provide installment plans or discounts for young expecting mothers.

2.       Keep your doctors informed

Tell your doctor about the supplements and antibiotics that you may be taking during your pregnancy. This applies both ways. If your gynecologist prescribes any medication, share it with your dentist and vice versa.

3.       Go easy with brushing your teeth

Brush your teeth only twice a day and skip after vomiting, even if you feel obligated to do it. You will most likely experience morning sickness while being pregnant which can make your pearly colored teeth discolored due to the hydrochloric acid being spewed out. If you must clean your teeth, wait for at least an hour so that your stomach and mouth can settle down. If you feel nauseated with the aftertaste, rinse you mouth with a mouthwash which contains no alcohol.

4.       Keep flossing

Always floss well. This way you can minimize the chances of gum disease. Flossing removes any food particles which can get stuck in between teeth and this is more likely amidst the morning sickness. If you can’t find the energy to floss, you can even visit a dentist to get the job done.If you cannot afford the hefty bill then opt for a dentist that uses a service like Simplepay Plans which helps finance your doctor visits.

5.       Consume more calcium

Take more calcium if you want to prevent contracting any diseases or developing cancers of the mouth. You must consume a minimum of 1000 milligrams per day. You can do so by having milk, yoghurt, cheese and spinach too. These foods are great for strengthening bones and preventing any fungal infections as well.

Dental care is very important and more so when you are an expecting mother. With the baby on its way, the last thing you want is dental trouble. The pain of a tooth cavity and stomach contractions combined can be an awful lot to deal with. If you plan your oral hygiene well, you will be able to protect your teeth and your bank balance too. Be sure to ask your doctor any questions about the necessary changes you can make to your lifestyle so that you can stay healthy for your baby!
