7 Easy Ways to Save Money on your Big Family Move

November 23, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Making a big move is expensive. If you do not organize yourself, do a bit of research or pay attention to what you are spending, you could end up doling out more for your move than you expected. Use these seven tips to save as much money as you can.

1. Purge

If you are using a moving company, expect them to charge in one of two ways: by weight or by volume. In either case, the less you have to move, the cheaper it will be. Use this as an opportunity to get rid of the things you no longer need.

2. Pack Creatively

Even if you are using a moving company like Bekins Van Lines Inc., you can save money by packing creatively. Instead of boxes, keep your clothes on the hanger and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. You can toss them in your trunk and move them yourself. Look for ways to creatively pack your belongings, reducing your need for multiple moving trucks.

3. Timing

Like traveling, moving is cheaper during the off-season. You will find lower rates between September and May.

4. Do It Yourself

Many moving companies provide extra services at a cost. Do what you can on your own. Pack and unpack your own boxes, store your belonging in your parents’ basement if necessary, and find your own packing supplies. Doing these things will save you money.

5. Estimates

Man people choose a moving company based on reputation or reviews. Take the time to get estimates from two or more companies. Prices for the same services can vary greatly.

6. Keep Receipts

Many people do not know that you can deduct moving expenses from their taxes. If you are relocating for work and your boss will not help foot the bill, let Uncle Sam help you out. Make sure you save any receipts related to your move so you have an accurate paper trail.

7. Utility Shut Offs

You have to shut off your utilities before you move. Timing the shut-dates correctly can help you save. Cut off any services that you can a bit early. When you do this, you are not paying for an extra month of service that you will not be using.

You cannot trim all the fat from your move, but you can save a few dollars here and there. By getting organized, doing more on your own and making a few proactive decisions, your move will be less expensive than you think.
