#DIY Abominable Snowman & Grinch Ornaments #ChristmasCrafts

November 18, 2015 by Misty Stephens

Christmas is my favorite time of the year and part of the fun for my family has always centered on our Christmas tree. We love putting it up and decorating it with all the fun things we have made or collected through the years. Each year we try to make a few ornaments to hang on our tree or to give to others as presents.  This time the children and I made Bumble ornaments — I love that abominable snowman from Rudolph!

To make the Abominable Snowman you will need:

  • Glass ball ornaments
  • Hair dryer
  • Crayons (white and blue is what I used)
  • Black and blue paint markers
  • Hot glue gun
  • White boa

First break the crayons into small pieces and place inside the glass ornament.  Mostly white with a little blue to add some depth and dimension.  Use the hair dryer on the outside of the ornament on high till the crayons start to melt.  Start swirling the ornament to coat the inside with the crayons.  Keep it up till you are out of crayon or have the desired coverage.  Then shake the remnants of crayon out into the trash.  Once fully coated I let the ornaments dry and cool off, while I got out my paint markers, and glue gun for later.

PicMonkey CollageI held the glass ornament in my hand and using the blue paint marker I colored the face of my abominable snowman, leaving the eyes white.  I outlined his mouth in blue as well.  I let that dry for a little while before adding black.  I colored the inside of his mouth leaving white for his teeth showing through.  Then I gave him black pupils.

Once the paint was fully dry I plugged in my glue gun and cut my white boa into short pieces.  I cut enough, so I could wrap it around the silver top of the ornaments.

Then I put some glue on the front half the silver thing and pressed the boa onto it.  Then I put glue on the back half and pressed the boa on till it ended.  I had to add some extra glue to make sure the two ends stayed down.

Make the Grinch too!

The coolest thing about this ornament is you can change the crayon color and boa color and make a different character altogether.  I did Grinch ornaments too.  I added glitter with them.  After the melting crayon step you pour some glitter in before the wax dries and shake the ornament.  It coats the interior with glitter.

If characters are not your thing you can also leave off the face and boa for a pretty custom ball.  I did one ball with layered colored crayons.  First I melted reds and blues for a few streaks of color.  Then I shook them out and added black and some purple and coated the entire ornament.  I added gold glitter inside and I ended up with a nebula like space ornament.

DIY Ornament Tips!

My children were a big help in breaking crayons and adding glitter, but the melting part gets real hot so you might want to do that part.   The hot glue also is very hot, so an adult should do that part.  These were fun to make and it is great that you really can change some colors and customize them to your favorite characters.  The possibilities are endless!
