Dread Going To The Store? How You Can Save Money on Everyday Items

October 5, 2015 by Pam Maynard

In television shows and movies, people always seem like they’re having the time of their lives when they go shopping. The truth is, as a busy mom or professional, shopping for everyday items can be more of a pain than a pleasure, especially if you’re working on a tight budget. Here are three ways you can save money that may take some of the sting out of shopping.

How You Can Save Money On Everyday Items

Buy and Cook in Bulk

A good way to save on groceries while also reducing the amount of time you spend in the kitchen is to purchase food in large quantities while it’s on sale and make your own frozen meals. For instance, pasta and sauce go on sale on a regular basis. You could make a large pan of lasagna, cut it into individual portions, and freeze for a quick homemade meal during the week.

Doing this can help you take advantage of sales that require you to purchase multiple items to get the sale price. It may also justify buying a membership at a warehouse store that sells items in bulk quantities at prices cheaper than found at the regular grocery store. Lastly, the time you save in the kitchen during the week can be put to better use doing other things like hanging out with the family or earning additional income.

Match Coupons with Sales

Possibly the best strategy for saving money on the things you buy is to match coupons with store sales. To be effective, however, you must know how store sales work. Although it may seem random, retail stores and grocery stores actually put items on sales on a regular cycle. For instance, a grocery store may put items on a rotational safe every 6 to 24 weeks to ensure the old stock gets sold to make room for the new stock.

You can save a lot of money by making a habit of watching the sales and searching for and downloading coupons that match. Although you can still find coupons in Sunday newspaper inserts, you can also find them online. In many cases, sites will let you print out multiple of copies of the same coupon so you can save money on each item you buy. Online offers for aliexpress.com can help you save money on everyday items and clothing.

To maximize your savings, don’t just look for coupons when it’s time to go shopping. Comb the Internet for coupons on things you frequently buy and stockpile them. Coupons are usually good for a few weeks, so there’s a good chance the items will be on sale at the store before the coupon expires.

Take Advantage of Cash Back Sites

If you do any type of shopping online, you can save an additional few dollars by taking advantage of rebate websites that offer you cash back on the items you purchase at your favorite online stores. These websites earn a fee for each person they refer to the online companies. They, in turn, split this fee with you. It’s a good way to shave an additional percentage off your purchase, particularly if you buy items with a credit or debit card that also offers cash back.

Even if your budget is tight, you can still save money with a little planning and effort. Put the money you save into a savings account for a rainy day or treat yourself to something you’ll really enjoy.
