Baby on Board? 6 Extra Steps Parents Can Take To Stay Safe On The Road

September 24, 2015 by Pam Maynard

You can only control your own actions on the road. This knowledge should influence your driving style even more with a baby. The use of your vehicle doesn’t affect just you anymore. Protect yourself and those you love with these steps for safer experiences while on the road:

6 Extra Steps Parents Can Take To Stay Safe On The Road

  1. Ensure Proper Car seat Fit And Installation

Many parents assume that as long as the buckles and straps are connected, all is well. However, some car seats require special connectors, and all of them require a certain tightness in order to serve their purpose.

Consult safekids.org to find the latest guidelines on car seat safety. You can also ask a health professional to check the car seat installation and strap tightness to further protect your baby.

  1. Provide Entertainment

Your priority should be safe and smart driving, not the task of keeping your baby entertained. For this reason, you should invest in one or more of the following items to keep baby satisfied:

  • Hanging toys (attachable to the car seat)
  • Baby-view mirror
  • Pacifier clip
  • First-aid kit

Ensure that toys are soft and light to avoid injury. Avoid small parts that present a choking hazard. If you invest in a baby-view mirror, don’t overuse it while behind the wheel.

  1. Drive Alert And Aware

Parenthood presents new variables to your experience as a driver, such as sleep deprivation, distraction, and hurriedness. Don’t let yourself fall into these common problems.

Every time you get into your car, stop and take a minute to assess your situation. Are you distracted or in a rush? Are you alert and awake? If your answer presents dangers to you or your child, remedy these problems before continuing.

  1. Pull Over When Necessary

It’s always better to pull over and deal with a fussy child than trying to calm them while driving. Toys only go so far in some situations. If your baby shows extreme hunger or requires immediate attention, stop your vehicle in a safe place before attending to their needs.

  1. Dress Children Appropriately

Before you begin your journey, consider the temperature outside, and how your vehicle will deal with said temperature. Your baby likely remains quiet when they are content and comfortable. Dress them in layers for hot car rides, or warmer clothing during the winter months. This keeps your baby comfortable and less likely to fuss.

  1. Drive Defensively

In more reckless days, you may have exhibited aggressive driving techniques to get your way. But things are different now. Obey all traffic laws and the speed limit. Always double-check before trusting other drivers to let you in, and don’t assume that others follow traffic laws.

If you experience a car accident and any person in your car receives an injury, consult a personal injury lawyer, say the experts at Fannin Law. They’ll help you obtain a fair outcome and inform you of rights and options for how to proceed.
