6 Tips for a Stronger Marriage

Is your marriage in trouble? Here are just six tips for getting things back on track and remembering why you fell in love with your spouse in the first place.

1. Make Your Own Friends

While mutual friends are great for double dates, it’s important to have your own support network outside of your marriage. You can’t drink wine and complain about your husband when all of your friends are his friends, too.

2. Share Physical Affection

Actions speak louder than words. Don’t be content with “I love you”s over the phone; make a habit of physically demonstrating your love for one another through casual, everyday touches. Hold hands when you walk down the street. Kiss when you get home form work. These little gestures can make a big difference in a struggling marriage.

3. Get to Know Your Spouse’s Family

You don’t have to like all of them, but keep in mind that these people were in your spouse’s before you, and they might be in it after you, too. If you aren’t willing to make nice with the in-laws, you could be in for years of awkward reunions and holiday dinners.

4. Let Go of the Past

It may be something like an ex-husband or an unrequited suitor; it may be problems surrounding kids or careers. The fact of the matter is that everyone has unresolved issues in their past. If you don’t want your spouse rubbing your nose in yours, don’t bring up theirs during an argument, either.

5. Focus on Solutions

When fighting with your spouse, make sure you’re fighting for the right reasons. Are you just trying to hurt one another, or do you really want to resolve the matter at hand? Keep your arguments constructive and focused on the big picture. Don’t let things derail into personal or pointless attacks.

6. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

This is the single most valuable piece of advice ever given to married couples, but they still persist in thinking their spouses should be able to read their minds or “just know” when something is bothering them. Don’t let issues fester! Sit down and actually talk about them before they become major problems.
