Five Back to School Safety Tips to Teach Your Kids

September 1, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Preparing for a new school year can be a stressful time as a parent, especially if this is your kid’s first time going. It’s the first time they’re going to be out of your care for an extended period of time, which can be a daunting thought for both of you. Luckily, there are a number of things you can teach your kids so they’ll be safer throughout the day. And even if your children have done this before, they can always use the reminder.

Five Back to School Safety Tips to Teach Your Kids

Picking the Right Backpack

Find a backpack with wide padded straps and a padded back. If at all possible, pack light and place heavier items close to the center of the back. For students who have to carry a heavier load and their school allows it, find a rolling backpack instead. If not, teach your children the importance of using both straps.

Biking to School

If your child wants to bike to school, first make sure that the school allows it. Practice the route a couple times beforehand as a family so your child becomes comfortable with it. Teach them all the proper hand signals, and impress on him or her the importance of wearing a helmet. If there are more neighborhood kids who go to the same school, see if they can ride together.

Walking to School

Like biking, it’s a good idea to practice the route a few times before school starts so your kid knows the safest route. See if anyone in the neighborhood will be walking and have them go as group. Teach your kids how to cross the street safely, and double check which crossings have a crossing guard.

Taking the School Bus

Prepare for the first day of school by figuring out where your bus stop is and walking there with your child. Make sure your children leave the house with enough time to get to the bus stop, at least five minutes before the bus arrives. Remind them to only get on and off the bus when it’s at a complete stop, and to stay quiet and seated while riding.

On the Playground

If the school playground stays open in the summer, visit before school starts. This will help your child learn where any potential hazards are and help them become more familiar with the area. Playgrounds are often where the most injuries happen. A personal injury lawyer might recommend you check with the school to be sure a supervisor is on the playground when kids are out there.

Teach these safety tips to your kids, and they’ll not only have a much safer school year, but a more fun one as well.
