Keeping Your Kids Healthy: Tips For The Busy Parent

August 30, 2015 by Pam Maynard

As a responsible adult, you have a lengthy to-do list that includes everything from paying the bills to mowing the lawn to doing the laundry. But as a responsible parent, your to-do list consists of just one thing: keeping your kids healthy and happy. Of course, that goal encompasses everything from washing their clothes to kissing bruised fingers. Between your work obligations and your home priorities, you have more than enough to stay busy 24 hours a day. So what can you do to simultaneously save time and protect your children?

Tips For healthy kids

  1. Encourage Better Eating Habits

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has doubled in children in the last 30 years. Experts confirm that obese youth have high risks factors for cardiovascular disease. To keep your kids healthy, start each day with a healthy breakfast, and pack their lunches with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. To save a few minutes in your work day, wash and cut foods the moment you bring them home from the store and freeze them in batches that you can serve the rest of the week.

  1. Keep Them Moving

Like you, your children need at least an hour of physical activity per day to build strong bones and muscles. Although their school likely encourages organized sports and dance classes, you can do your part to keep your kids on their toes. To begin, limit the time your kids spend in front of the TV or computer to less than two hours a day. Next, make exercise fun through family activities such as walking around the neighborhood, raking and jumping in the leaves, or playing a game of kickball together.

  1. Stop Colds and Allergies in Their Tracks

Your children faces countless germs and bacteria whenever they go to school. To keep colds and flu and bay, give your child hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes for him or her to use at school. And teach your son or daughter to cough or sneeze into a tissue. If you want to make your home a safe haven from illness, stop germs and allergies in their tracks through cleaning and sanitizing. Rather than trying to clean the entire house over the weekend, make a goal to spend 20 minutes a day keeping things tidy. Also, hire a Crystal Lake pest control expert to treat the yard and home. This will kill and remove any harmful insects and allergens that hitch a ride on your children’s shoes or clothes.

  1. Stick to a Schedule

Kids thrive when they have a routine, and it can help keep them healthy and happy. They should be getting enough sleep each night, and a nightly routine can help them get in the habit of getting to bed on time. If they are going to sleep and waking up at different times each day, or not getting enough sleep, they could become irritable, tired and even more prone to illness. Scheduled play times can also help you to make sure they are getting enough time to exercise. Sticking to a schedule has many benefits for children.

When you follow these easy steps, you can create a healthy environment for you and your family. Keeping your kids healthy and happy doesn’t have to be a daunting task, even as a busy parent.
