Your kids can go Back-to-School without Summer Brain Drain!
Did you have a good summer? I know it’s still August, but my son has been back in school since Monday. And, guess what? He read so much this summer, he is loving school and his new teachers. I never thought he would “love” school again, now that he is in seventh grade. It all started with the Summer Reading program with Scholastic! The theme this year is Power Up & Read- and let me just say that READING does give you power- the power of knowledge, imagination and accomplishment.
How did we avoid Summer Brain Drain? We had a little help from Scholastic!
The biggest thing we did was make reading an important part of our day. Scholastic’s Maggie McGuire has 5 easy tips for making reading a priority for your child, like setting a weekly minutes goal, reserving special time to read together as a family, and celebrating reading accomplishments. We used to celebrate when he finished a chapter book, but now we just get him another one or two books!
It wasn’t too hard to get my son to read, since he already loves it. One thing we really worked on was finding books that we ALL liked to read. We used to read chapter books at bedtime when my son was 7, 8 and 9. No more picture books. We knew he was hooked when he asked me to start ordering entire book series, not just one random book.
Another thing that instilled the love of reading into him was OUR love of reading. Children really do imitate their parents. He saw us reading and always wanted to “read” too, even before he could read on his own.
It’s not too late to get your kids reading. Visit “Videos in the Stacks” to receive reading tips for parents from Scholastic’s Maggie McGuire. There is still time to avoid the Summer Brain Drain so your kids will be excited to go back-to-school! Check out many other resources on Scholastic!
Book Reviews are NOT just for kids!
We have been challenged to review 5 of our favorite summer reading books. The hard part, each review can only be 5 words. It’s a great way for the whole family to talk about their favorite books and maybe inspire their siblings to read the same books!
My son discovered a new series this summer- Falling Kingdom! He loved the first book so much, we had to get him 2 more in the series so he could keep recording his minutes. He loved all 3 books so they were his choices for the 5 Word book reports!
If we could describe our favorite books in 5 words, this is what they would be:
- Falling Kingdoms: Attention grabbing, exciting, epic greatness. (my son’s)
- Rebel Spring: Enthralling, page-turner with very real characters. (my son’s)
- Gathering Darkness: Fantastically engrossing and positively amazing. (my son’s)
- Alongside Night: Timely book on Economic Crisis. (my hubby’s)
- Paws for Reflection: Inspirational heart-warming devotional pet Love. ( mine)
What is one of your favorite books that you read this summer?? Can YOU come up with a 5 Word book report?
