Families Changing Borders: Tips for Moving to a New Country

August 12, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Imagine moving day. A moving truck to rent; boxes to carry. Who was in charge of keeping toilet paper accessible? Families struggle to keep up with these details. Now imagine moving to a different country. There is extra information to keep in mind, and many things to learn about the new home. Families who move across borders are often resilient and brave, but here are some tips that can assist with making an out-of-country move as smooth as possible.

Families Changing Borders, Tips for Moving to a New Country

Finding a Place to Live

People may be used to searching for a house or apartment in their country of origin, but how do you find a new home in a place with different procedures and customs? Sometimes immigrants get taken advantage of if they do not know the laws of their new area. One example involves landlords charging new families illegal amounts of money for deposits. Avoid scams like this by familiarizing yourself with housing laws, looking at apartments with someone trustworthy knowledgeable about real estate, and consider having a trustworthy co-signer if your landlord needs someone to vouch for you.

Community

Especially in larger cities, there are often communities of people who have moved from other countries. Although it is not necessary to only be acquainted with people from your country of origin, it can be comforting and encouraging to connect with others who have gone through the same process of moving. Search for ways to get involved and receive advice from others who were new in the country at one time.

How to Get Around

Cars are often the easiest form of transportation. If you’re new to the country, it can be difficult to find out how to get a driver’s license. This driving practice site can help people study for the driver’s license test so they can be prepared. Some of these resources have study material in multiple languages so that people can retain the information in their own tongue. Material may include practice tests and is often free for users.

Searching for a Job

You or some of your family members may be job searching after you move. Finding employment in a new place can be challenging. One place to start is by searching for volunteer work or an internship, to gain experience in the new culture. Another route to take could be joining a professional association or group to network and learn about opportunities.

While moving to another country may not be easy, it is a great opportunity to see the world from a new perspective and to have a chance to travel around different areas of the world. Hopefully with these tips, you and your family will be able to transition well and enjoy your new home country.
