5 Ways to Cut Your Fuel Expenses

August 5, 2015 by Victoria

School is starting back and it is the time of year when you feel the weight of all of those extra trips to the school and ball field. After school activities can me a lot of extra expenses and you may begin spending more in gas than you want to.  Don’t do that!  Learn how to curve your automobile expenses below ~ Victoria

How to Save at the Gas Pump

Are you looking for the best ways to reduce your automobile expenses? While it may be difficult to reduce costs on fixed-rate expenses, you do have flexibility to save with your gasoline bill. Beyond being a smart shopper, there are several steps you can take to stretch your gasoline as far as possible. These are my top five ways to cut your fuel expenses:

  1. Preventive Maintenance– Your car’s engine needs three thing to run: It needs air/fuel mixture, compression, and an ignition source. Making sure that your car is getting the required amounts of each is critical to performance. To do this, you should begin with routine fluid maintenance and ensuring fuel and air filters are changed regularly. From here, check your owner’s manual for the manufacture recommendation on changing your spark plugs and wires. If the time is nearing, go ahead and change both at the same time.
  2. Tires– Maintaining your tires will greatly affect your gasoline consumption/mileage. Properly inflated tires will not only increase the gas mileage, but will also make your car handle properly. You should also rotate your tires per the manufacturer recommendation.
  3. Unnecessary weight– Reduce as much weight in the car that you can by removing anything that isn’t necessary to your trip(s). A clear trunk and passenger area will help increase your gas mileage. This means your jogging stroller, cases of water, and donation boxes should be removed if you don’t need them,
  4. Careful Driving- Speed limits are designed to provide you with the maximum speed, safely. These limits have little, or nothing, to do with the optimum speed for your vehicle. The best speed for your vehicle to reduce fuel useage are those under 60 mph. For even greater fuel conservation, utilize your cruise control option as often as possible.
  5. Route Planning- Researching your travel route will prevent you from driving extra miles. Plan for the most direct route possible and study your route before leaving.
