“Power Up & Read” with the Energizer Bunny®!
Now in its 9th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program dedicated to stopping the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out. This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” powered by ENERGIZER®.
My son has enjoyed all the weekly challenges. I never have to bug him to read- he LOVES to read and has already read 3 books this summer vacation. If he isn’t reading, he’s writing his own stories.
The first week we just had to find a relaxing spot to read with the Energizer Bunny. We love our Hammock chair and my son reads there when the bugs aren’t out. The second week we had to have a little fun with science and the Energizer Bunny. The Magic School Bus science kit was a fun evening activity. The kit gave off enough light for Justin to read more of his book. The third week, we got “Carried Away with Reading.” We like to visit the park and find a quiet place to read. The Energizer Bunny enjoyed it too!
But, if you have kids that don’t really enjoy reading, they need to check out the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. After you sign them up online, they can go to the website to play games, unlock new stories and enter their minutes read. They’ll realize that reading can be fun if they find the right book at the right time!
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Scholastic has joined together with ENERGIZER® to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading. There is still time to sign up HERE – the challenge runs through September 4, 2015.
We have really enjoyed the Summer Reading Challenge this year! Summer and reading go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly in our house. How about yours?
What do you think? Could we beat the number of minutes read in 2014? Right now we are at 170,098,641 minutes read. Join today and let’s set a new reading world record for summer 2015!
For more information about how we got started in our Summer Reading challenge, read my post HERE.
Have you heard about Monday Minutes?
In an effort to log as many minutes as possible through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge AND to break the world record for summer reading, Scholastic is setting special weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday we’ll be announcing a #MondayMinutesGoal, the number of minutes for kids to read together in one week (by the following Monday).
Whether your child or student is reading independently aloud or together with you, let’s share their success and keep the momentum going! Here’s how:
– Have your child log his/her minutes on the SRC website or on a paper log/piece of paper
– Take a picture of him/her proudly displaying their minutes
– Share it on social using #MondayMinutesGoal and #SummerReading!
