Are you ready to join us for the Power Up & Read  Scholastic Summer Reading Program? (Powered by Energizer®)

Do you think we can beat the record from last year?

We participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge every year!  Why? Because my son is a voracious reader- he really can’t ever do too much reading.  He is so funny- many of his 6th grade classmates really dislike reading and he can’t understand why.  He reads books like the Hunger Games, The Day after Tomorrow (he actually did each of his book shares for school on one of the books in that series) and many other adventure books.

One of my favorite parts of the Summer Reading Challenge is all the resources for parents.  If you have a reluctant reader, there are MANY resources to help your child LOVE reading.  I have been using the Home Library Builder to find some new books that my son will love.  It’s all about challenging your advanced reader to expand his horizons!  Take a short quiz to understand how to build the best possible home library for your independent reader.

Here are a few of my questions and their results. I love how it recommends books my son will like.  One of the recommended books was my son’s favorite in Fourth Grade- Where the Red Fern Grows.  When we were looking at the other recommended books, he asked to put Walk Two Moons on his reading list for the summer.

Have you signed your child up for the Summer Reading Challenge yet?  It’s FREE and super easy to do.  Go HERE to get started!  You kids will love the games, stories, badges and other fun surprises.  There are MANY parents resources also.  It’s my favorite part of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge this year.  Once I login and go to the parent section, I get lost there for an hour, checking out new books, ways to get kids to read new books and sometimes I even play some of the kids’ games.  Shhhh, don’t tell my son!

Now in its 9th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program dedicated to stopping the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out.

  • Why should kids read this summer?  The summer months can be challenging for many students.  They go into a “summer slide,” the common loss of skills due to being out of school, when they do not read over the summer.
  • How does the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge work?  It’s very easy!  Go HERE to sign up.  After you create your account, your child can log his minutes online or mobile.  The whole goals is to try to break last year’s world record of 304,749,861 minutes.  Did I mention it’s FREE?
  • What’s new this year for kids? Kids can unlock 12 original short stories (exclusively for this year’s challenge) from favorite children’s authors and access never-before-seen videos from the authors!   There are also some great new games and a contest to win prizes. My son loves that he can log minutes to earn digital rewards and badges as he reaches reading milestones.
  • What’s new this year for parents?  There are so many great resources for parents.  Parents can sign up for the Daily Digest!  Did you know you can even enter a Sweepstakes?  You can win a “Power Up & Read Kit” and watch videos about summer reading activities to keep you “innovative” all summer long. The prize pack includes: Scholastic tote bag, water bottle, a copy of Reading Unbound by Jeffrey Wilhelm and Michael Smith, $10 gift certificate to Scholastic Store Online, Energizer® brand batteries,Scholastic books, and more.  Don’t forget the FREE printables- Scholastic has a multitude of printables for all ages!
