Feeling a little confused or overwhelmed about how to attend a Twitter chat? It’s not as complicated as you may think. Actually it’s nice because when you attend a virtual party you don’t have to do your hair and make-up. 😉
Twitter chats or parties are simply a scheduled organized conversation. The attendees follow along using a hashtag. An example is #PreTreatYourself, which is an upcoming chat MDR will be participating in. If you are uncertain who the hosts or moderators are and would like to find the party, type in #PretreatYourself or whatever #hashtag is being used into the search bar (see image above).
When you type the #hashtag into your search, it will bring you to a page where you will see this:
If you click on “Live” you will see the live stream of tweets by the host(s) and people attending the chat. You can read along and reply to tweets or retweet comments that interest you. In this chat #PreTreatYourself, you can see that @hhgregg and @Samsungtweets are mentioned. They are hosts.
Follow any and all @hosts’ twitter accounts. The chat host will be asking questions and moderating the conversation. Be sure to follow along so you can answer questions in order to be eligible to win prizes. If a host ask Q1,(question 1) your tweet answer should begin with A1 (answer 1).
ALWAYS use the chat or party #hashtag in all responses so no one will miss your comment or answer!
If the chat is moving very fast you may need to refresh the page to keep up. If you see people answering the host and you missed the question, you can type in the hosts’ @twitterhandle into the search to go to their profile in order to read the question. Once you have it, type in the chat #hashtag to your search and go back to the party. Usually someone will retweet the question to make sure everyone sees it.
The whole point is to learn about the topic, connect with new people, and have fun! Once you become comfortable with Twitter chats you may want to venture off of Twitter and onto other platforms that will allow you to join chats. These sites are specifically designed for keeping up with larger Twitter parties that are moving rather quickly. Twubs or Tweetdeck are popular platforms to try.
Don’t be shy, everyone has to start somewhere! I love finding people who are new to Twitter parties during a chat. We have a lot of fun and laugh LOTS together. Chances are, you aren’t the only “newbie” at the chat!
