Just about everyone has an old hoodie or sweatshirt in their closet that they just can’t bear to part with even though it has long since ceased to be fashionable. These old clothes are in desperate need of a make over to make them look and feel new again. That’s where these DIY hoodie ideas come in handy. They’re so cute and unique that you may find yourself stocking up on cheap plain hoodies just so you can sport a new look for every day of the week.
Peek-a-Boo Cut-Out
This is a great idea for a project if you have a scrap of fun fabric lying around that you’re not quite sure what to do with. Cut the fabric into a circle or square large enough to take up most of the back of your hoodie. Then, cut a hole in the hoodie slightly smaller than the fabric you just cut. Turn the hoodie inside out and stitch the fabric in place so it covers the hole.
Quilted Design
Cut a large shape out of an old quilt or other piece of patchwork. Semi-complex designs like stars or geometric shapes tend to work best. Attach fusible fabric web to the back of the patchwork shape to transform it into an iron-on decal. Position the decal on the front or back of your hoodie and press it in place with an iron set to high heat.
Winter Accessories
Get ready for winter by transforming one old hoodie into three accessories. Begin by cutting off the bottom half of the sleeves to make arm warmers. Cut out a thumb hole, then fold part of the sleeve under and stitch it in place to reinforce the arm warmer. Next, cut out a beanie shape, then cut a length of the hoodie’s waistband to use as the headband. Stitch the two together to make a cute winter hat. Finally, cut off the remainder of the hoodie’s sleeves at the shoulder, then add a draw string to cinch them in place. Wear them as leg warmers to add a splash of color over the tops of your winter boots.
Dog Hoodie
Dogs deserve to be warm and fashionable too. If your old hoodie is still in good shape, why not pass it on to your four-legged buddy? Try the hoodie on the dog, then cut it to fit him. Be very careful when pinning and cutting around your pooch, and don’t hesitate to measure with chalk and then remove the hoodie before taking the scissors to it.
Don’t relegate your favorite old hoodie to the realm of laundry day clothes. Give it new life with one of these cool DIY makeover projects.
