Your home is a place where you likely spend a large amount of time. You prepare meals, watch television with your family and enjoy holidays together. There are a few cozy updates that you can do in your house that can make it feel more like a home.
Fireplaces
This is a way to save on electricity in the winter while giving you a warm feeling through the rest of the year. You can use the mantle on the fireplace for pictures and other decorations. In the winter, you can place many holiday decorations on the mantle. There are different kinds of fireplaces that you can choose from, ranging from an electric unit or one that uses wooden logs.
Keep The Beds Made
One of the ways for the home to feel like you live there is to keep the beds made. Add decorative pillows and comfortable blankets. Change the bed linens through the year to match the seasons. Use something darker in the fall and winter and something lighter in the spring and summer. Position the pillows so that they are propped against the headboard or wall, giving a comforting feel to the piece of furniture as well as the room. After the bed is made, you can turn down the sheets and blanket just enough to make it look like you are ready for bed.
Lighting
Instead of using the brighter overhead lights, place a few lamps on tables or in the corners of rooms. These are often dimmer, giving a warmer feeling in the room. When you use the overhead lights, they can often seem harsh, especially when you want to relax after a long day.
Windows
Your windows might not seem very important, but they can play a part in how the home feels, especially during the day. Consider installing windows with arches at the top or those that are smaller so that you can choose various shapes. Try to only use shaped windows, such as circles, in the kitchen or bathroom. When you install the windows, add curtains or Sunburst Shutters window coverings that blend with the furnishings in the room. Nice window treatments will go a long way towards making your house feel cozier.
Furniture
Begin with one room, and make sure there is plenty of space to sit or rest. The living room is a good place to start. Add couches that have large cushions, or put pillows on the ends of the couches or on a chair so that you have somewhere soft to sit. This will also give the illusion of a cozy room. Light a few candles on a coffee table or a mantle above the fireplace to give a soothing feeling. Blankets are also a good thing to add to the living room to make it feel a little more like home.
Walls
When you change the paint color on the walls, you can go from a house that looks neutral to one that feels like a home. Neutral colors like beige or brown are a little better to work with than white. A soft blue or green is also ideal for giving a comforting feel to the room. After you paint the walls, add a few pictures of your family. Include pictures of your children, the grandparents and other members who you might not see through the year.
There are several things that you can do in your house at any time of the year to make it feel more like home. Try to use soft cushions and blankets instead of those that have a rough feeling. Update the colors in the home, and add a few decorations that make the rooms in the home feel more inviting.
