Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich #Recipe

April 12, 2015 by Victoria

Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich Recipe

For years, my kids and I would take off each spring to visit family in West Palm Beach.  On my last night in town, my older brother and I would go out to dinner, just the two of us.  It was always a special treat for some one-on-one time.

Our first stop was always a seafood grill of some sort; anywhere that had blackened Mahi Mahi.  No matter how many times I ordered it he would say “Dolphinfish! NICE!”

…

Mahi Mahi is a great fish for those who don’t like fish.  The flavor is very mild with hardly any “fish” taste at all; even milder than shellfish.

In a restaurant a blackened mahimahi sandwich meal could be upwards of 700 calories.  My mouth hit the floor when I learned that because the average Mahi Mahi steak is only 80 calories!  You should DEFINITELY make it at home reel those calories back.

Tips to keep your calories down: Don’t use butter and use olive oil sparingly.  Don’t forget to grill your whole wheat bun with olive oil instead of butter.  Skip the sea salt in your seasoning if sodium is a worry.  Go light/lite with your side dishes or don’t have sides at all!

I make my own blackening seasoning using 1 tbsp each of paprika, onion powder, garlic powder,  1/2 tbsp oregano, and 1 tsp each of black pepper, white pepper, and cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp of sea salt.   I am not a “pepper” person and this combination works well for me.  You may want to play with the combinations to find what tastes best for your pallet.

Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich:

Ingredients:

  • 4 Mahi Mahi steaks
  • Blackening seasoning
  • Olive Oil
  • 4 Whole Wheat Buns
  • Tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Onion
  • Mayo (optional)
  • Mustard (optional)

I prefer to do all of my sandwich prep first, this way my sandwiches are guaranteed to be served hot.  I grill our buns and slice lettuce, tomato, and onion before cooking our Mahi Mahi.

Rinse and pat dry your Mahi Mahi fillets/steaks.

Pour blackening seasoning onto a plate with a lip or a shallow bowl. Lightly brush Mahi Mahi with olive oil. Press steaks into blackening seasoning firmly.  Do this for both sides.

On Medium/Medium High, heat a non stick/cast iron pan with a small amount of olive oil.  Add Mahi Mahi steak and LEAVE IT ALONE for 5 minutes!  Flip and cook the other side for an additional 5 minutes.

Add Mahi Mahi to your prepared bun and serve with your favorite mayo and/or mustard.

Mahi Mahi Sandwiches are filling on their own so we go lite with our sides.  Two brown sugar grilled pineapple slices and a handful of kale chips is what we serve alongside our dolphinfish for dinner.  Yes, you read this right!  This is dinner, it costs less than $15 to make, and serves my whole family.  Enjoy ~ V
